Sunday 3rd December 06 - Sounds of the City featuring Signe Tollefsen and Ade Webb at the Lamp Hull
(2/2)
By Michelle Dee
|
(1/2),
(2/2).
|
Very soon after Signe started, silence descended throughout the room.
Each and every person fell under her enchanting spell. In between songs, she
entertains with stories that offer an insight into her writing and personality.
She explained that often a song would come pouring out after someone had done
really bad things to her. She spoke about an ill suited partner and a song she
wrote about drinking and smoking and the realization to come later that he was
no good for her.
Her voice hypnotic, her guitar style minimalist, almost ponderous as she falls
into full bodied deep sounds or pin prick sharp notes.
|
|
|
Shifting from a twelve
string to a six stringed instrument she produces startlingly different guitar sounds.
She also uses different tunings, including an almost open tuning which means you use
less fingers on the fret-board to produce the different chord sequences.
|
|
Signe manages to be both easy and laidback yet intense and emotional simultaneously.
It's not just the sonorous voice and the rising falling string sounds but the
fearless way in which she commands the attention, creating a powerfully beguiling atmosphere.
I watched as men anxiously dashed to and fro, buying drinks, afraid they might miss something.
She sang a poignant song with the line die an artist and not know glory now, that had me
close to tears. And then, a song called This is it that started of spectral and shadowy
then tones increasingly desperate, as if clinging on to something precious and beautiful.
|
|
The silence after the song was unsurpassed as the audience looked on overawed and spellbound.
|
Sweet tears followed and introduced a smoky blues element, strong bass lines with
unusual vocal mid sections that broke up the rhythm. Signe drops in to her set an
obscure track by David Bowie as song taken from the film Labyrinth.
This one has more of a pop ballad feel and incorporates vibrato vocals not the
obvious lip tremblers of a Saturday night talent show, but more measured and controlled.
|
|
|
During I caught you watching I sat, breathed in the heartfelt sentiments, the
anticipation and desire.
Her finale King of the Fire was magnificent, and as her voice easily reached higher
and higher notes, we touched on a singing arena that is usually left to the arias of the opera.
|
|
Signe Tollefsen is a hugely talented unique must see artist.
By far and away, the best solo act I've seen in my three years of musing on local music.
It is incredible she has not been picked up by a major label yet.
After Signe came back for an earthy and passionate encore in the style of
Nina Simone the applause rang on and on. She explained to us how she has
entered some kind of Dutch music competition.
Apparently, and I find this hard to believe, she is lagging behind some of the
other artists and encouraged us to vote online for her.
So here are the instructions from Signe on how to vote.

Lads sporting fine Mohican hair do's standing tall, ladies in their tightest t-shirts,
make up done just so. These are the punk kids piling in to the Adelphi during a heat wave.
Tonight the celebrated punk band Freaks Union are putting on a special show to
commemorate ten years in the business; ten good years as front man Jimbo proudly announced.

Its blisteringly hot the air cons knackered there are young louts on stage
pretending to be bad ass gangstas from da Bronx with little or nothing to say.
They go on about being open to ideas, accepting everyone for what they are and
being free doing what you do, but it is all bullshit.
Judging by the racket they were making in the corridor whilst the visiting

Music Reviews - Sunday 17th September Aberfeldy Catherine Feeny and The Rocky Nest New Adelphi Club By Michelle Dee

What a delightful night of live music; once again I found myself down at the Adelphi Club in Hull.
A night with a strong billing that attracted a fine knowledgeable crowd.

the two nights supporting The Beautiful South at the City Hall in July

Music Reviews - Leeds Festival - Part One By Joe Hakim Photos By Stuart Mountain and Mak
|
|
My mates decided to throw a party the night before we were due to set off for Leeds. I initially thought about taking it easy, but the alcohol began to flow and before I knew it I was as pissed as a fart. Some of my mates went outside to have a game of football in the street, so I necked a half and sat on the windowsill and watched them play.
Unfortunately,

Music Reviews - Wednesday 23rd August 06 - Analogue Consumption Quick To the Observatory and The Clauberg Opera at the New Adelphi Club By Michelle Dee - NEW Photo Gallery by Tim Sinister

Tonight was a night of firsts, three of them to be exact.
The First "first" was Analogue Consumption's debut; a progressive three
piece with heavy New Order influences.
The bass driven sound was pleasingly at odds with the low key vocal
style of the charismatic front man.
Those around me said it reminded them of someone; that muted vocal style

Music Reviews - Tuesday 22nd August - GST Cardinals The Vultures and Park and Ride at
The Sesh By Michelle Dee Photos By Michelle and Rachel

Just got back from The Sesh on Princes Avenue, I had to strip off as soon
as I was in the privacy and comfort of my living room because I was so hot and sticky.
Sat naked now, I write this appraisal of tonight's eventful triple header.
GST Cardinals were in fine fettle taking a rare early slot they proceeded to
rock the Sesh to the rafters. They played a mix of

ROCK! This is something that seemed to be sadly lacking in Hull in recent years,
though once again Ringside seems to be at the forefront of this with some visionary booking.
Such was the case tonight, with RingsideLightning Jack Cane and his rock revival disco in
the downstairs bar of Ringside, with a sizeable number of real rockers

We at thisisull had originally chosen the band Tarifa to go with Ernest to play at
Christopher's but sadly they had to drop out. Luckily Cilla kept her eye on the ball
and soon had vintage beauties Kill Surf City on the bill instead.
Yours truly did somewhat have the wind taken out so to speak, so all credit to
Cilla and Brian for holding this one together.

Music Reviews - Wednesday 9th August 06 - Prologue to Leeds: The Unsigned Bands Showcase at The Welly By Joe Hakim Photos By Mo

So I get up late, overwhelmed by an uncontrollable lust for hummus.
Goddamn those funky mashed up chick peas, I can't get enough.
I'm still managing to hold onto my common-as-fuck credentials though - I eat it with chips.
Putting my nibbles issues aside, I get my shit together and head off to The Welly to
see the Carling stage warm-up event,

Humber River halfway down the Far Ings Road, in the glorious sunshine, you will know you
were part of something very special. If you were not then you missed out, unbelievably so.
Yesterday's nine hour Humber Fest music marathon will become the stuff of folklore.

Music Reviews - Monday 10th July 06 - The Briggs at The Ringside, Hull By Jason and Jordan Carroll Photographs by Mo

My son and I had just drove up from Stockport where on Sunday night we saw The Briggs,
and yes we are big fans.
On Monday night there were only about 60 people there, which is a shame for a great band from the USA.
They came on and it was 100 miles per hour from start to finish with great songs like
One Shot Down, Waiting in the shadows, Dungeon Walls

Music Reviews - 6th July Stripped 1st Birthday at the Wellington Inn By Michelle Dee Photographs By Mo

Stripped acoustic night is one year old and I have finally managed
to get down to one of the increasingly popular nights of live music.
I order a pint of the Stripped birthday ale produced specially
for the occasion and slip into a seat near the front.
The music takes place in an area to the left of the main bar in a fairly small
room,

Music Reviews - Tuesday 13th June 06 - Bon Jovi at KC Stadium By Steve Rudd Photographs by Brigitte Freeman

Fans of rock music in Hull haven't really had much cause to complain over the past couple of
years, given the fact that the likes of Bryan Adams and REM have both played at the KC Stadium.
I could hardly believe it when Bon Jovi were announced to play as the final date of the band's
European leg of their world-wide Have A Nice Day tour, and thus I duly

After careful, strategic, military organisation (something that has always come
naturally to Hull bands) Turismo and their entourage were ready for lift off
which would launch them bang in the middle of Harewood House in Leeds for the
Wireless festival.
Sadly, much to the distaste of your humble narrator, the organisation committee
had exempted me
