The Bonnitts have been quietly becoming one of the most talked about bands in Hull. They have developed over the last year into a very watchable band, with a penchant for bell like chiming chords and stand out euphoric highs.

As they began I was back from the stage, I watched the crowd swell drawn by the electro-magnetic sound. I saw the bridge towering over the stage, I heard the sounds clear as sharp crystals and it made me feel glorious as Andreas Johnson once said.
The crowd were bathed in pinks and oranges as the heat cooled, and we stood for a moment to drink in the marvellous scene that was Humber Fest. The Bonnitts have been announced to play this years Unsigned Stage at Leeds Festival; rightly so. They played an attractive set including recent hit Soldier and the haunting Feral Kid.

The four-piece have managed to take on some of the aspects of popular indie music while retaining their own individual sound. Up close some one complained that you couldn't hear Mike's vocals but I assure you that about twenty/thirty paces away his voice came through loud and clear.
Some people questioned the inclusion of Dumpvalve on the bill. The heaviest thrash metal band in Hull but with Freaks Union pulling out then organisers Raw Talent The Sesh and Sandman had to get another band that would entice some of the non-indie types over the water.

Dumpvalve have long been touted as the best hard rocking metal band in Hull and today they proved why. Thunderous drums screaming guitar and dramatic vocals resounded of the concrete structures supporting the bridge. I watched to see how the crowd reacted.
To be honest they lost a some of the die hard indie fans, but other people, a slightly older male crowd, got up for them. Fingers hooked in jeans watching the fancy guitar work probably saying to themselves this is real music, none of your namby pamby indie stuff, just loud as hell rock like we used to have.

They have a big sound, a very big sound. Fast driving guitars, slightly death metal vocal style with at times punky choruses Heavy drums and deep bass grooves underpin the guitars. Every so often the intensity levels drop as a quiet section creeps in but the resulting storm that follows is all the more effective.
The band see their influences in the older raft of metal bands like Pantera, Sepultura, Machine Head and G n R. This may have accounted for the lack of youngsters watching them.

At one point during Dumpvalve's set I met up with a young chap called Ellis he didn't speak much but his legs were going ten to the dozen. His eyes shone and told a thousand stories. He was clearly having a great day, an infectious smile grew on his face and that leg seemed to be keeping pretty good time. We continued this slightly one-sided interaction until his mum Gaynor turned his pram the other way around.

Music Reviews - Saturday 1st May - Rock the Vote at The Adelphi By Lucy Kynman
Last night's amalgamation of Elobo and Funky for Rock the Vote, dedicated to raising funds and showing the local area's support for the green party and candidate Martin Deane, was a great success! Green being the theme for the night, can I just say well done to Alice; when it comes to creativity and a unique sense for interior design you never fail to hit the mark! Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 23rd April - Hard-Fi, Boy Kill Boy and Turismo at Sweet n Sour, Silhouette Club By Dick Spring with a terrfic 9 page Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
On arrival at the front of the club I find a queue waiting to get in, so this must be some measure of the demand for this show tonight (oh, the power of hype) though a top ten single can't have helped the headline band's cause at all! It was indeed packed out, it took me twenty minutes to get a drink, which is something that needs to be addressed by Read more...

This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com. Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now. About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh Read more...
