Before the Dirty Dreamers came on I took the opportunity to have a wander back stage
I bumped into Digsy and Bill still high on the after show feeling, then caught sight
of Mike Wright from The Bonnitts.
He was busy taking on fluid to keep his vocal chords
lubricated he told me that the worse thing that could happen on stage would be him losing
is voice that and snapping all his guitar strings.
|
|
|
The best thing would be if everyone gets up and shows their support he said hopefully.
I wished him well and took a breather in the shade back stage.
The lack of shade was an issue pointed out to me early on in the day and apart from the
Beer tent there was nowhere to get respite from the sun's rays.
The tents at the bottom end of the field were stacked high with chairs from the
previous night's entertainment.
|
|
I walked back ground just as the Dreamers began their high octane set.
A crowd fifty strong moves to the front and shout and scream for the boys on stage.
I can see Ash is visibly shaking as he gives it his all during Overload.
New bass player Carlos gives it some too taking his bass for a walk and the doo-hickey
he's plugged into is dragged across the stage.
|
|
|
Luckily eagle eyed Engineer James is on hand to set the thing back in place.
The Dreamers hit the stage running and were the first band to really pull a crowd.
|
|
I get to hear some of the new songs live for the first time; Japan has more of an
Indie vibe this could be due to the changes within personnel or a reflection of the
current trends in emerging music.
The mid section's break down shows variation, consisting of a single drum beat repeated
backing up the guitars and has Chris getting a rare chance on the mic.
The atmosphere on stage is one of togetherness the four seemed to have really gelled as a band.
More is made of the bass guitar in Carlos' capable hands particularly with the newer material.
Perhaps the dreamers will push the Indie envelope and come out the other side into a new rock plain.
|
On You've Gotta Fight 'em the Stones influence is clear and reinforced by Ash's stage swagger.
And although a mic down by this time the band do there best to keep the mood at boiling point.
My favourite is next, Let Me Show You How for me, is one of the best, out and out rock n roll
songs, around. I'm at the front dancing, enjoying every second from the tambourine shake on
feeling down coming around through the manic chorus then to the guitar solo, that erupts
stage right to the last distorted note from Baz.
Three lines comes next and sees Ash straddling the mic stand and a serious attempt at the
rock star pout from Carlos.
|
|
|
The jury is still out on the pout but the song still has much to recommend it.
Shape up come's straight out the barrel and delivers a say no message to the kids.
Trouble is the message falls on deaf ears because the rock n roll lifestyle is made to look like so much fun.

Neville Staples, Quartermain and The Bonnitts at The Ringside, Monday 19th December 05 By Dick Spring Photos By Mo
|
|
Monday December 19th 2005 is a date that could go down in the musical history of the city, for
that was the day Neville Staples, original rudeboy singer of the legendary Two Tone
band The Specials, and co founder of Fun Boy Three, made a triumphant return to Hull.
Opening up were Hull favourites The Bonnitts who, though beset by a few technical
problems, marched on through

Music Reviews - Tuesday 15th November - She Likes Parties at The Sesh By Becky
|
|
Over the last few weeks I have watched She Likes Parties come forward in leaps and bounds.
Having gained a reputation from Sally Likes Parties (vocals) performing a capella at
Staks cafe bar, acoustic sets at Linnet, Staks and Adelphi and drunken spur of the moment
sets in the back room of Saturday night Silhouettes, the band had a lot to live up to at
their debut gig as a full

Music Reviews - Thursday 15th December 05 - Band Wars at The Polar Bear By Michelle Dee

Band Wars 2005 Result is an Insult to Hull Music.
You know there's something amiss when you have to explain the presence of your bar staff in
one of the bands to reach the final four.
The competition was held at Polar Bear, the prize was a £1000.
The four bands in the final were Jilly hates Willy Konscience,
The Cyclones and The Landaus.
There really was no contest or shouldn't have been...

Music Reviews - Bob Geldof at Hull City Hall - Thursday 1st December 05 By Steve Rudd
|
|
December 1st 2005, in my mind, has gone down in history as an unforgettable day.
It was the day I met my biggest hero.
And whoever said that to meet your hero is usually a disappointing affair was wrong
in this instance, and since meeting Bob Geldof (twice in one night!),
I'm filled with even more respect for the man ... the god.
I never ever thought I'd get the chance to meet

Music Reviews - 3rd November - Mystery Jets at The Adelphi By Emily
|
|
Thursday 3rd was Mystery Jets' third visit to the Adelphi -
their previous gig, earlier in the year - and proves that they are only
getting bigger and better.
This time around the venue was a lot fuller; buzzing with people curious
as to whether the Mystery Jets live up to the hype.
Since the Jets' last Hull appearance, the band has gained coverage through
the NME

The fresh five-piece from Hull have fast become the band name to drop in any
discerning musos discourse.
Recent months has seen them leapfrogging the opposition and quickly reaching and
surpassing a few significant milestones.
The band had barely been together two months when they headlined at the
Sesh (see review thisisull.com
) Linnet and Lark.
This was quickly followed by more

Music Reviews - Night Clubs - Friday 2nd December - Regis at Pure Techno at Rhythm Room By Michelle Dee
|
|
Friday night in the icy rain I flagged down a cab to town.
My preferred late night spot tonight was Rhythm Room on Baker Street for a heady night of uplifting beats.
Someone once enquired, What is this rude, lewd, lascivious junk called techno? What, indeed.
One way of describing it is like a sonic sunburst

Whenever a musical icon dies, there always follows a period where their name and
image is turned into a commodity.
The best current example would be John Lennon.
The celebration of what would have been his sixty-fifth birthday and the impending
twentieth anniversary of his death has sent the record companies and the various
conglomerates that

Scarborough Beached Festival 2005 Sunday By Michelle Dee Photos by Roland Standaert and Michelle Dee

Sand beneath my feet, sounds of activity on the stage, blue skies overhead, sun blazing: a strange
but rather pleasant surrounding for a gig.
Amaya Huntly and Jon Neeves had the unenviable task to open the show on Sunday.
An acoustician and Keyboard duo; the highlight of their set was the Credence Clearwater Revival
cover where they proved with a strong number they can do a

Friday 25th November 05 - Franz Ferdinand at Hull Ice Arena By Michelle Dee

Last night probably the biggest name in recent Indie music touched down in Hull as part of their Europe-wide tour. A tour, which, will see them play thirty-seven dates in sixteen different countries.
The tickets were sold out almost as soon as they came on sale, so we knew we were in for a
packed gig with plenty of people and a great atmosphere.
The Glaswegian multi-award winners sure know
