Theirs is a solid foundation on which creativity and innovation thrives. I'll focus, for just a moment, on one song that, highlights and encapsulates this idea. New but Old starts a cappella then flows into a tight groove with an electro indie kick. The lower vocal tone lends a bit of an eighties vibe as the energy increases then the punk influence comes in towards the finish. I liked this one. The violin on the next was slower darker backed by a wall of fuzzy guitar. The use of radio mics (no lead) allows Hetty to use the sizeable stage and come down to the front.

She turns and spins expressing herself and the music through dance. On tip toes she leans forward singing right at the crowds. City Ghosts have a strong loyal fan base and given a later time slot I think would have had a lot more people on their feet. They provide a slightly different listening experience and visually catch the eye with the theatrical and expressive stage performances. But it was a strong set with many highlights. Particularly Greg's guitar pirouette at the end of Echo, and the vocal gymnastics on Last one standing.

Next up were Barton's very own 59 Violets, Digsy was sporting his trademark white t-shirt and cool shades and launched into Yeah yeah yeah with gusto. They set out the Violets stall of fast hard hitting rock with an emphasis on rhythms and guitar. I particularly like the slap bass intro from Bill on Dirty Water but what is happening to Digsy's voice? He has strangled it almost out of recognition. It's alive, edgy, and dangerous even, as he yells down the mic guttural and potent. The lyrics are shoe horned into the songs as Chris to his left struts the stage on Steal from me.

I thought the home crowd would have gone a bit mental for the Violets but the reaction was muted and sporadic at best. I later found out that many of the Barton fans were left standing at the gate during the band's set. This was due to misinformation being sent out about the fact bringing your own alcohol into the Main arena was prohibited. They had brought beer with them in cool boxes but then had to sit and drink it all before they were allowed in, which resulted in them missing the Violet's set. I spoke with another chap who had had to drink half a crate in quick time before coming in, which left him far more intoxicated than if he had been allowed to spread them out over the afternoon.
