AfterGlow Nine months and Forty gigs later...
By Michelle Dee
|
Not many moons ago AfterGlow were a group of friends who got together because of a
shared passion of live music and in spite of differing musical tastes or maybe for
that very reason they decided to form a band.
They found themselves a common ground to write and play music that they liked.
I first saw them play at the ill fated
Quintessential Quayside sessions
when two songs in particular caught my ear; Electric Eyes and Blue Skies.
|
|
At that time the five-piece were pushing their first demo consisting of
crowd favourite the almost eponymous Indie AfterGlow.
Also on the three track CD was the catchy Promises with the sing along chorus and Echoes.
So here was a band that came out of the blocks gigs lined up with something solid
to pass on to promoters and venues alike.
|
|
AfterGlow are arguably blessed by living outside of Hull, in that they
don't have the Hull band sound. The bands locality is just one of the
things that sets them apart from other bands plying their trade in Hull;
The differing personal tastes in music means they bring more than just
the Indie tag to the table one of those being a hefty rock influence.
|
|
Listening to the vocal tone and style of front man Will you are reminded
of the more theatrical sound of Maiden, rather than the current penchant
for one dimensional Indie growls.
I am also reminded after AfterGlow's headline slot at Ringside Hull tonight
that the combination of Joe lead-guitar and Will's voice is also something
to listen out for.
|
In fact the band seem to relish sharing vocal duties and tonight Rucko steps
up to the mic and delivers his own singing style adding an Emo edge both
in looks and overall sound. Tonight's performance is a strong one; the
music both stirring and fun and the personalities; warm, spirited, yet
coolly professional.
It has been said that Will's onstage antics are akin to Ash Foster's; no
bad thing really a young singer emulating his hero.
|
|
|
It has happened throughout the decades, the real skill is to take on board
what the others do then add something that is just you to the overall effect.
I think Will is learning his craft well and shouldn't be discouraged from
trying on different rock n roll personas.
|
|
AfterGlow have had many gigs since I saw them at Quayside; almost a constant
gig schedule the likes of which I've never seen from such a young band just starting out.
If I remember rightly they have booking until January 2007 no mean feat in this
time when bands up and down the country are looking further afield to push their music.
|
|
Past gigs worthy of mentioning would be the home town launch of the second CD in the summer.
This proved to be an auspicious return gig in Gilberdyke, which attracted
150+ people and the attention of some of the bigger Hull bands such as
The Vels -who played on the bill- and The Dirty Dreamers.
|
Sometime later I heard that they had been given the opportunity to play an
HMV Showcase gig in Leeds. I worried for the young group hoping against hope
that this was not a repeat of my own recent experiences with so-called Showcase gigs.
I recently travelled with funkadelic band Ernest to Earls Court in London for
one of these type of events only to find that heartless, corporate
bloodsuckers who couldn't even be bothered to show up for the live music
on offer that day.
|
|
|
Thankfully the astute AfterGlow seemed to have found a genuine gig and proved
popular with the Leeds crowd.
|
|
The five-piece band, hardworking and wise beyond their years got it right again
when they supported Hull's biggest unsigned band of the moment
The Dirty Dreamers at an XFM Manchester gig on.
AfterGlow have very quickly become a force to be reckoned with on the
northern gig circuit.
The new songs Saviour and Welly sees the band improving on the earlier stuff
so the dream start should continue to bear rich fruit. Look out on October
10 for the band playing the ever popular Sesh.

Music Reviews - Leeds Festival - Part One By Joe Hakim Photos By Stuart Mountain and Mak
|
|
My mates decided to throw a party the night before we were due to set off for Leeds. I initially thought about taking it easy, but the alcohol began to flow and before I knew it I was as pissed as a fart. Some of my mates went outside to have a game of football in the street, so I necked a half and sat on the windowsill and watched them play.

Music News, Interviews - Interview with Paparazzi Whore By Karl Whiting

This is a whole new ball game to me.
I was sitting in Pave, drinking cordial having arrived slightly earlier than the band.
The atmosphere's relaxed and Joni Mitchell's playing overhead - what more could you wish for?
I was waiting to interview the band Paparazzi Whore - my first ever interview.
And how surreal, interviewing one of my friends I went to college with.

Music News, Interviews - Interview with Tom from The Cherry Cobb Cartel By Michelle Dee
|
|
Why did you form a band?
Initially I think forming a band just seemed like a good idea, and I suppose it is. But a better reason would be because we wanted to make music we liked. There are bands everywhere now and I'd say about 75% misses the spot with me, so if you're not satisfied by what's currently available, then I say do it yourself!
