Interview with Dance Bastards featuring Kate Wood and Amy Harrison (1/2)
By Michelle Dee Photographs by Kate Langan www.katelanganphotography.co.uk
(1/2), (2/2).

With my copy of Kate Millet's Sexual Politics open, I sit down to type the interview just conducted with the hottest, hip-sounding electro/punk/rap group in town.

Tonight was the debut of all girl duo Dance Bastards, and the fact that most of you missed it, is just pitiful. These two girls are in their early twenties, never pay full price for anything, and take no shit from anyone.
Next time Dance Bastards play, there will be packs of baying girls pushing to get to the front, all of them screaming out the playground chanting and sassy lines that form part of the Bastards music First the name: I'd rather hoped this was said with a commanding tone ie. Dance, bastards!

The emphasis on the singular words directed at those reluctant to move at their shows. Sadly, I am wrong and the name is borne out of a three year old joke between friends. In fact the name refers to a desire to bastardise the current glut of dance music that spins relentlessly up and down the charts then vanishes without trace.
Kate Wood, singer and Amy Harrison, guitar, are former members of the band Miss Curie Law. Their track Disco of Death attracted the attention of the NME and was reviewed in the popular music magazine. This month, without the two knowing, their new musical project Dance Bastards, reached the number three slot in the NME Breaking Bands chart. The girl's dream of an interview with local broadcasting star Peter Levy, they speak fondly of his penchant for M&S, his cute tush, his frame, dinky and tanned.

Amy has a passion for Battenburg - delicious cubic sponge coated in marzipan- at the first rehearsal we ate copious amounts of cake washed down with Cherryade she recalls with a laugh and smile.
The girls are not interested in drugs, they hardly drink and would much prefer a cup of tea and a bun than irreverent alcohol fuelled nights.
After speaking with the girls, I pick up that their greatest love appears to be the love of a good book. They enjoy shopping like most girls, but prefer to find their own unique look rather than adhere to some predetermined fashion or trend.

Having seen the recent video for the song Sucker and picked up on its feminist overtone, I wanted to find out where they stood on gender politics. What I found was not the militancy that perhaps the video suggests, but a wish for equality amongst the sexes.
Both Kate and Amy agree that other factors that divide society, such as race and class, are equally important as the everyday struggle between men and women. They proclaim in unison we are not Feminazis and add we don't relate to Valerie Solanas... she made up the Society For Cutting Up Men (SCUM)... she was a bit of a nut job!
