An Interview with The Holloways at Yo-Yo - Saturday 21st October 06 (2/3) By Michelle Dee

This reaction was partly due to the content of the piece, the reviewer described them as sounding just like The Libertines and they clearly don't, live or recorded, and partly because it was the very first review they had received of the album. You can imagine the soul searching after a lot of effort and work put into recording your first album, and some misinformed reviewer comes along slates it and dismisses it off hand, you'd be rather upset to say the least.

It was two years ago that The Holloways came about, after an impromptu gig at Nambuca in London. The band takes its name from the Holloway Rd, a popular place for emerging musical talent to live and work. One of the bands booked for Nambuca that night failed to show and headliners Babyshambles persuaded the group of friends and hosts of the night at Nambuca to get up and play. The encouragement from Babyshambles and the crowd's reaction spurred the band to take the next step and they set about practicing more and playing live gigs. Being involved in putting on live music events at Nambuca they knew all too well the pitfalls of the London gig circuit.

By carefully picking and choosing their gigs the newly formed group avoided getting stuck playing the same places. They also decided early on that it was crucial to play outside of the capital and took in some of the major cities up and down the U.K. on an intense gig schedule. It was at one of these out-of-town dates, this time Manchester Barfly, that they were seen by Jonathon from the label TVT. He immediately made the four-piece band an offer. Other labels offered the band contracts and that all important buzz formed around The Holloways.

The band looked at these different offers coming from some of the more corporate labels and chose TVT. They did this to retain as much autonomy in the group, to give them a sense of control over their music, their direction and the gigs played.

Heart is where the Holloway is I quip to Dave, now totally engaged in the interview. He and Rob told me about some of the in-stores they had done. These are where a band comes in to a record store like HMV, signs CDs and meets some of the fans. They explained that there are certain people out there who attend these events with nothing more than financial gain on their mind.

Rob jokes that you can spot these characters a mile off with their pony tails and dodgy moustaches. They buy the CD then get the band to autograph it, making sure that no dedication to themselves is written - personalised dedications make the item worthless in monetary terms - then put the highly sought after item on EBay and sell to the highest bidder. I was shocked that this goes on and instructed the band next time to dedicate the discs To dodgy bloke with ponytail or scrawl To EBay on the cover to spoil these ne'er do wells day.

The Holloways recently toured with Babyshambles and announced that the date at Leeds University was probably the highlight of the whole tour. They recall the enormous crowd, the song Janey Jones and the association of the Strummerville charity set up after the death of Clash member Joe Strummer.
