An Interview with The Holloways at Yo-Yo - Saturday 21st October 06 (1/3) By Michelle Dee

Tonight was the London based band's third appearance in Hull, the two previous gigs being at Ringside supporting Towers Of London and a show at The Lamp during the heat wave in July. This tour is now described as the fucking hot tour by Dave, the band's drummer. The band recalled the crowd at the Lamp describing the mix of people as very strange.

There were those who had definitely come to see the band and then there were others who just happened to be there having a drink and a bit of a social.

Both groups of people received the band well and many accompanied The Holloways to party late into the night at the indie disco Jelly at the Welly Club after the gig. Included in this memorable tour was a home gig at The Garage in London where the temperature inside the club reached a blistering 68 degrees Fahrenheit; the club's hottest recorded temperature.

Dave remarked on the intensity of the heat on stage saying I nearly died.

Tonight's gig was met with raucous behaviour from the attentive crowd, including a moment where one of the crowd was brought on stage to accompany them on tambourine. The band were cheered on after each number and connected with the Yo-Yo clubbers well. The band described tonight as their best Hull gig so far, praising the venue, the crowd and the hospitality.

The Holloways released their new single, Generator on the 14th October and after the first week of sales it managed to break the charts entering at No. 30. This was slightly below expectation as they had been predicted to go in at No. 25 and after talking with the band I found that they had been hoping for position 23 or higher.

Although they did say that when the charts were to be read out that they would miss the announcement because they were due to be sound checking on the Sunday evening for a gig at Night and Day Manchester.

However, Generator has already beaten the previous single Two left feet -the one with the line need some joy in your life that reached No.33. Tonight the song is dedicated to friend and music lover, Joy dancing with friends at the front. Rob the Holloway's guitarist and occasional violin player explained to me that the most important thing is not the figures, but whether the people who listen and come to the shows, really appreciate the music. For a band receiving a lot of coverage, some positive some not so, in the music press lately, they came across as a thoroughly likeable and grounded group. They admitted that the recent review of their new album, So This Is Great Britain? in Q Magazine left them feeling more than a little disheartened.
