Friday 14th October 05 - The Subways at The Asylum contd
By Andy Tullock
|
Prev Page
|
The common belief of modern music that your live performances have to be as good as
anything manufactured in the studio is known to freely by every act that graces a mic nowadays.
Whilst it's a vane attempt to strain every vocal to make it sound as pure, or gimmicks
galore to hid the inadequacies that have been papered over with glorified guitars.
|
|
|
But with this band there's no acknowledgement of this fact, just a shining love of
the music they play and a contagious confidence that, yes they will make it.
And anyone else that was at the Asylum on Friday 14th October, would agree with them.
|
|
For any that had any little doubt they would've been convincingly bowled over by
the bands miniature encore that ended with a massive recreation of their highest
charting single so far, Rock and Roll Queen, which not only had every single
hand in the air, an body and heart pumping but every lip shouting in an
ignorant bliss at their new found anthem.
Then when lead singer Lunn decided that, having already shed his top halfway
through a winding set, that it would now be a good time to emulate his stage
dive from earlier; which had come complete with guitar solo.
|
|
With a melodramatic fake run-up he hurled his body in a slow-motion Matrix
style fling, body-flopping into an opened arm, and more then willing, public.
The limbs that belonged to these followers bedded his body, wet from every
bit of effort from the last hour, and bobbed it where it was until
instructed to send it to the back of the aforementioned pit, where a
mysterious, middle-aged admirer, ideas anyone? stood nodding.
A small hand-shake, followed by an all together more emotional hug which was
felt by every owner of envious eyes that gazed on, still bouncing signalled
an end to a night of memorable activity.
|
Or so we all thought, for then just as you wondered how Lunn would send himself
back out in better style, the answer came when the Steve Irwin wannabe clambered
all over the railings that were supporting dehydrated, reinvigorated youngsters,
who were, all credit to them, still trying to bounce.
Their idol then scaled the heights as far as he could to situate himself on the top of
the majestic that had stood proud through the night.
From here the messiah orchestrated his people for one last adrenaline rush,
before sheepishly climbing down.
|
|
|
With all things being symmetrical, it was only fair that the other
sides speakers were also able to go to Sound School on Monday boasting
that they supported the new hero of Hulls educated common folk.
This was followed by an award winning thank you to the audience who
more then played their part in the performance, like footballs twelfth
man, they became the fourth, fifth & sixth member that it sounded like,
for so much of the night, which the band had.
And don't be surprised to hear a similar speech at next years Brits,
if the recognition that is deserved has reached this trio by then.
|
|
I, for one, would close the books tomorrow because there is something special here.
Ask me again in a week, when I'll have witnessed one of their nearest challengers,
The Ordinary Boys, at the same venue, but it will have to be something equally special.
Because these kids did good, the only thing they've got going against them is my
time keeping, and The Man's cruel grip.
|
|
But he may have an emerging group of British talent that will induce many
sickies and re-route careers that will cripple his economy; and that
my friend, is the American Dream.

Music Reviews - Night Clubs - Friday 2nd December - Regis at Pure Techno at Rhythm Room By Michelle Dee
|
|
Friday night in the icy rain I flagged down a cab to town.
My preferred late night spot tonight was Rhythm Room on Baker Street for a heady night of uplifting beats.
Someone once enquired, What is this rude, lewd, lascivious junk called techno? What, indeed.
One way of describing it is like a sonic sunburst

Whenever a musical icon dies, there always follows a period where their name and
image is turned into a commodity.
The best current example would be John Lennon.
The celebration of what would have been his sixty-fifth birthday and the impending
twentieth anniversary of his death has sent the record companies and the various
conglomerates that

Scarborough Beached Festival 2005 Sunday By Michelle Dee Photos by Roland Standaert and Michelle Dee

Sand beneath my feet, sounds of activity on the stage, blue skies overhead, sun blazing: a strange
but rather pleasant surrounding for a gig.
Amaya Huntly and Jon Neeves had the unenviable task to open the show on Sunday.
An acoustician and Keyboard duo; the highlight of their set was the Credence Clearwater Revival
cover where they proved with a strong number they can do a

Last night probably the biggest name in recent Indie music touched down in Hull as part of their Europe-wide tour. A tour, which, will see them play thirty-seven dates in sixteen different countries.
The tickets were sold out almost as soon as they came on sale, so we knew we were in for a
packed gig with plenty of people and a great atmosphere.
The Glaswegian multi-award winners sure know

Drum n bass creeps up from your feet to your fingaz and puts a smile on everyone's face...
I am aware of the genre drum n bass or d n b as it is commonly referred.
A good few years ago I stayed by my radio all night to tape the Bristol pioneer Roni Size playing live on air.
I watched with interest a docu-road movie on LTJ Bukem and the antics of MC Conrad.
The show ended up with the

On Sunday 6th of November the popular cafè bar cum restaurant on Beverley

This event is not to be confused with Band Wars organised by the staff at the
Polar Bear on Springbank.
The bands that had successfully made it to the final were Hollywood, Minus 272 and the Vels.

Music Reviews - Saturday 8th October 05 - The Mardous and 59 Violets at Yo-Yo By David Thurlby Photos By Michelle Dee

The Yo-Yo night at The Welly Club on Beverley Road is slap bang in the middle
of its most hectic period what with all the students back in place and the host of bands that
are lined up to play it's Live Lab. Tonight saw a band from just across the bridge
share a small and compact stage with some up and coming chancers from down south.
Barton's own 59 Violets

Music Reviews - 14th August 05 - Frank's Right Hand Trouser, Shindigg, Sal Paradise and The Vultures at the Adelphi By Anthony Baine.

So, another week, another gig.
This time it's the Paul Jackson's gaff for some of Hull's top local fare.
Sundays are usually quite hit and miss in the summer months while there are
no students about and this on this occasion I took a seat in a half-full
Adelphi just in time to witness four bands strut their stuff.
First up were The Vultures.
Hull's music scene at the moment consists mainly of

In the same inexplicable way that you sometimes wake up a second or two before the alarm goes off, I wake up just before the door to the room I'm sleeping in opens. Dave bends his blonde head round the door.
"Helloo" he sings and advances into the room wearing a face like the Cheshire Cat.
I muster some kind of greeting and check my watch for the time.

Very friendly staff as I entered the building.

Saturday 13th August 05 - Arctic Monkeys at The Silhouette by Nick Quantrill Photo Gallery by Darren Rogers

Supported by The Applewhites, Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys rolled into Hull as the current
NME-approved future of music, and for once they might just be correct.
Despite having released just one single, the band has already toured extensively to build
a formidable word of mouth fan-base, and they look equipped to explode into the musical mainstream.
