I began to go off them.
Tonight I'm afraid I found the stage show of Paparazzi Whore bereft of any humanity, overtly
sexual, contrived and the whole thing left me cold.
The gaffer tape wrapped around the guitarist's chest was more than a little strange.
It seemed that all the cheap glitz and glamour was there to hide the fact that
musically the band weren't all, that some were making them out to be.
The way I see it is that Paparazzi Whore are creating all the trappings of a
mainstream act with roadies -wearing PW Crew emblazoned on their chests-
expensive music videos, dancers and the like yet they are just another local band.

I don't believe there is justification for all the plaudits they get.
If Sally from She likes Parties got her boobs out and started thrusting herself about,
well she'd get called all the names under the sun.
I'm not saying I am the sage on female behaviour far from it, but I do believe there is a
way to convey strong feminine energy without prancing around the stage half naked.

There we go, I can feel the cold steel nail inches from my heart.
Finally tonight we had the Soho Dolls.
A name I'd heard in certain circles long with names like Le Tigre and this new
wave of electro indie style bands. Once more those chic eighties motifs come shining through.
Fine detail intricate refrains that tease and tantalize the sad little crowd.
Where were you all? Next door at Johnny Mac's with the better sound system,
launching your SU newspaper that's where.

I find my place alongside the small group that has crept to the front and start
shaking my hips in time to the synth sounds coming from the girl in killer heels.
The front woman stage presence reminds of Blondie; sexy yes, but stylish and controlled.
They play the song 1724 about being lost in Regents Park.
The story shimmers along allowing the keys and vocals to drive the song.

The soundscapes increase in depth and magnitude becoming monolithic and towering.
Distorted sounds introduce the lead singer this time seductively crouched on the
floor high soprano voicing to go with a song about a gay guy crush.
Backing vocals all soft and sultry lovingly put together.
It's kind of dark and meaningful moving into more spaced out key sounds.
At times the stage presence seemed to veer into vaudeville it had a wordly appeal Germanic at times.

You could probably tick of all the groundbreaking electronica artists as having influenced the sound.
I heard the high energy of Pet Shop Boys the subtleties of New Order the theatrics of the
Human League all coming of the Autobahn.
I look to the band's banner and see mice playing with mascara wands; shapes and silhouettes.
I feel the girls are the leaders in this band. I sense a security between them on stage.
The boys do there thing and entertain doing eye catching stuff with guitars but the
girls have that strange allure.

Yesterday was a very special day. Around five o'clock on Thursday evening, I was listening to
The Beautiful South sound check.
The hall was a hive of activity with technicians climbing rope ladders to the gantries,
erecting barriers at the front of the hall, and making ready for the first TBS gig
at the city centre venue for over 16 years.
