Screaming Tarts (Limited Edition 18 Track Compilation Album)
By Steve Rudd
|
The superb second release from Mr Martyn at www.screamingtarts.com
, this is a rare rock
compilation album that comes packed with eighteen fresh cuts of Glam-infused rock action
that are all genuinely brilliant.
Teenage Casket Company headily kick-start proceedings with their catchy Dial It Up riff,
before Electric Eel Shock liven affairs up even more with the lust-lashed rock 'n' roll
of their Scream For Me anthem.
The album in general is a perfect mixture of already well-established outfits
(with McQueen, The GaGa's, Miss Black America and My Ruin for starters) and
fresh bands that the majority of the nation might not have heard of yet, such as
Lucifer Star Machine, Pornovurt, Ten Foot Nun and Inner Mantra.
|
|
|
Mr Martyn never discriminates when it comes to music.
So long as the overall quality of the music is great, then that's all that really
matters, regardless of how well-known the band might be.
The exciting thing about compilation albums like these is that it's a great way
for the less-established bands to get heard en masse, and for people
on a global scale to start spreading the word about such bands and their music.
|
The Screaming Tarts series of compilations has so far sold like wildfire,
largely due to the success of Mr Martyn's www.screamingtarts.com
website that
receives hit-after-hit, week-after-week... from music lovers right around the world.
All the bands who have so far featured on either this release or the first
Screaming Tarts release owe Mr Martyn a huge debt, bearing in mind that
people as far afield as Japan, America and Australia can now sit in the
comfort of their own home and listen to music by bands that they might not
have otherwise ever come into contact with before.
|
|
|
If you like rock music of any sort, you'll love every last one of these
eighteen Screaming Tarts-endorsed tunes.
Who can resist the feisty and catchy fem-fronted rock of Brand Violet and their
Lovesick Ballad of La Gata Blanca, Blunderbuss' sobering confession that anchors
I've Been Drinkin' Again, let alone Liverpool Pop-Goth band Zombina & The Skeletones
- Counting On Your Suicide?
|
The album is one long highlight, but the triple-header presentation of McQueen's
amazing Life Support ICU anthem, Phluid's genuinely rip-roaring and life-affirming
Rock 'n' Roll Is Dead (Long Live Rock 'n' Roll), and The GaGa's heart-attacking
Replica tune is the point at which the album climaxes to the most ecstatic degree.
Still, perhaps the most well-known and obsessively-followed band that features on
this release is saved right for the very end.
When a band of My Ruin's calibre allows a song such as Spilling Open to feature
on a compilation album, it's almost a sure-fire guarantee that such an album is
indeed a must-hear exercise.
And it is. In more ways than eighteen.

Single Reviews - The Holloways - Generator (Sensible Recordings) By Nick Quantrill
|
|
Hailing from the Holloway Road area of London, this limited edition,
vinyl-only debut release is a prime slice of ska-tinged pop from a
band destined to be one to watch out for in 2006.
Lead track Generator is a three-minute snapshot of what the band have to offer.
With its prominent harmonies and choppy guitars, Generator is something
approaching a 21st Century take on

Folk, Pop and Rock. Their debut album is forthcoming, and provisionally titled

This four-track EP, however, is titled Runaway, which is also the name of the first
track that proves to be the perfect introduction to the music of Ellenby.
Liz Young is the singer, while multi-instrumentalist

Album Reviews - Jethro Tull - Aqualung Live (RandM) By Steve Rudd

Over thirty years on from the release of Jethro Tull's classic Aqualung
album, Aqualung Live is an amazing album in its own right, that captures a live
performance of all the songs that featured on the original masterpiece.
Only legendary band front man, Ian Anderson and ace guitarist Martin Barre remain
from the original band line-up, but the

Time to reflect. 2005 has to go down as a great year in my book. I've thoroughly enjoyed my work at various events across the city. Everyone has seemed up for it.
Positivity has reigned supreme. Talent has emerged from all quarters.

Single Reviews - Coldplay - Talk (Parlophone) Reviewed by Steve Rudd |

First there was Speed Of Sound.
Then these guys returned to literally haunt us and to Fix You.
Now all Coldplay wanna do is Talk.
And if they want to talk, the masses will sure as hell listen.
This is the third single to have thus far been swiped from their
stupendously successful X & Y album, and - as always - it is an anthem
dominated by both frontman Chris Martin

Album Reviews - The Raindogs - The Adventures Of The Raindogs (Three Track Demo) By Steve Rudd

Hull-based quartet The Raindogs are understandably turning ears in their direction with their
uniquely spirited brand of indie-fied rock 'n' roll, that magically manages to be damn
catchy come the choruses of all these three songs.
Stop Smiling is up first, and straight away band front man Martin Clappison stuns the senses with his
extraordinary voice: a voice that is

God, no! The 'Sun front man in James Broad was recently injured whilst making the accompanying video to

the aforementioned video.
Long story short, he injured himself. Details are

Bob the Builder has effectively already been here and done this, but this twee novelty

on it being 2005's Christmas Number One literally increasing day by day.

Album Reviews - The Peasants - Champagne Lifestyle On A Lemonade Budget (Our True Records) By Steve Rudd

|
Whatever you do, don't you dare judge this CD by its cover, that shows the
two young guys who make up this musically gifted duo - Jody McKenna and Dave Saxby.
They both look like mean-spirited rockers, and both were brought up on the biggest
council estate in Britain - Hull's Bransholme estate.
Yet, the style of music that these two make together is in fact sweet harmony.

Album Reviews - Paparazzi Whore - I'd Rather Be Infamous Than Famous (DV8 Productions) Reviewed By Steve Rudd

There aren't many bands around that allow their sound to be dominated by a bass-driven whirlwind of noise.
Paparazzi Whore are something of a unique band, in that there is no lead guitar melody in the mix, but
just bass guitar and rhythm guitar... both played by Chris Oaten, who is one of the four talented band members.

A truly magnificent album from start to finish, first impressions don't last as the beautifully
chilled-out 'Intro' (that combines piano, vocals and a lilting string arrangement to subtly
rousing effect) couldn't be any more different from the brand of rock that swiftly follows with a bang.

Wise words indeed from this thrilling Canadian band; a band that has bust out
of Winnipeg with one hell of a mission - and that mission is to rock hard! And loud!!
A ball-breaking rock 'n' roll riff dominates this smile-inducing anthem, as this
quartet indulges in a similar upbeat exuberance to bands like The Black Velvets and Jet,
lightly stained by the wicked fun of The Hives.

this record allowed him to create a roots record that signposted the way forward
