Faith No More - The Platinum Collection (Warner) By Steve Rudd

A never-to-be-forgotten rock band for so many reasons, Faith No More hailed from California, and for fifteen years they produced some amazing rock music, a fact that is proven by this awesome collection of some of their best material. With fifteen of their own classic tunes being included, along with a live version of their old classic We Care A Lot, and their infamous cover versions of Lionel Richie's 'Easy' and The Bee Gees' 'I Started A Joke' that are both tagged on at the end for good measure.

All these songs have been culled from the years between - and including - 1989 and 1997, during which time the band was fronted by Mike Patton with a passionate vengeance and one hell of a voice to boot. Faith No More actually started out in the early 80's, and at one point they had even been fronted by Courtney Love! Still, once Mike joined the band at the back-end of the Eighties, FNM hit their most commercially successful stride and took the rock world by storm in the process, with their Epic tune being partially to thank for bringing their name to the masses courtesy of its semi-controversial music video that featured a fish flipping about out of water!

Epic is thankfully included on this collection, along with the classic rock anthem From Out Of Nowhere, and the sublime, haunting and Goth-tinged Last Cup Of Sorrow that's dominated by its heavy riff and that featured on the band's 1997 Album Of The Year long player. Songs such as the vitriolically vibrant Falling To Pieces are just as great as anything the likes of Guns 'n' Roses and Ugly Kid Joe ever knocked out in their prime, while the amazing Everything's Ruined and Kindergarten sound as life-affirming as ever, even though they were both recorded back in 1992.

Underwater Love, meanwhile, is upbeat and chart-friendly rock at its best, imbued with INXS-styled vibes. As for the band's cover of good old Lionel's Easy, every element of this reworking is perfect, with the instantly recognisable piano melody working wonders against Mike's emotional and soul-stirring vocal performance. It's just a shame that the band folded in 1998. Still, nobody can really complain when Faith No More produced so much thrilling music over the course of their career. Fortunately, this Platinum Collection release gets right to the heart of what this quintet was all about.
