Teddy Geiger Stepladder EP By Jimmy Reed

Teddy Geiger has a voice, a look and a song writing style which will appeal to a wide spectrum of listeners; which is always a good start. A very simple formula employed on 6 track EP Step Ladder - the production is very understated, which is good to hear, and Teddy combines the elements of dusty vocal, acoustic guitar and at times, strings and a beautifully toned piano, with a confidence that the collection he's put together will not sound samey. He succeeds. First track Try Too Hard draws us in with a cute run down on the guitar reminiscent of Jack Johnson and when the initial low tones of the vocal kick in these are not dis-similar to Mr J's... though perhaps with a pinch more breath and dirt which add a good edge.

The voice however isn't limited to these lilting low notes and the strong lifted sections punch away from that smoothness we've been lulled into. The catchy Confidence is one we chaps can all relate to in telling women how we feel,...nothing tastes as sweet as what I can't have, and ladies I hope will appreciate what we go through as the chorus skips in, I'm gonna muster every ounce of confidence I have / and cannonball into the water. Stand out track for me is Look Where We Are Now which as it happens is piano led, a great melody throughout and another great theme.

Layered with some subtle strings before that guitar picks it's way gently into the room after the first chorus, And you said games were much more fun / I'd rather play than get things done / but look where we are now".

A very minor quibble with track two, Hallelujah - don't get me wrong, still a very pleasant track... only that with a title like that, if you'll pardon the reverse pun you anticipate one hell of a piece of composition a la Leonard Cohen.
