CrackTown - There Must And Shall Be Midgets (an appraisal) (2/2)
By Michelle Dee
|
(1/2),
(2/2).
|
|
Shipping Clerk, see's guitarist King Rat taking the lead on an ode to the blue collar worker
as he recalls the drudgery of the nine to five. Then it's time for Boudoir Prison Blues,
first heard at a select gathering of like minded folk at my 29th Birthday soiree, then
rarely made an appearance until now. It has undergone a few changes but remains one of the
best sing alongs on the album. The Incredible Idi Amin illustrates the notorious despot's
human rights abuses with all the barbarous wit you've come to expect from CrackTown.
Track six enters the private personal world of lost loves, a poignant tale of pain and rejection.
|
|
I think I'll pass this time asks the question whether it really is better to have loved and lost,
than to have never loved at all. Last Request feature's churchly keys and sombre notes, a
hefty slice of harmonica and a muse on that all important tune which accompanies your coffin
down the aisle.
|
Imagine how pissed you'd be, if some half-wit played eighties party hit The Only Way Is Up on the
journey to meet your maker; actually that one has a certain hopeful truism about it.
Monkey Men follows the sermonising -beware the dancing ape that emerges from the shadows at live
shows and accosts the audience at every turn- making way for the ballad Leavin Las Vegas.
If there's a single on the album this may well be it be it.
King Rat once more takes the lead depicting fame, fortune the fickle hand of fate, how one
minute your in Vegas the next no-one wants to know as Nat Roe tentatively attests to.
|
|
|
The album closes with Pris'ner #783 also jostling for possible single status.
The popular number an irreverent two hander, bringing Big Brother, societal politics,
globalisation, the state of the nation, consumerism and death to account with an even hand.
|
|
So have CrackTown successfully avoided the pitfalls and chasms associated with
the dreaded second album?
The recording quality is better, the vocals clearer and all in all the production is passable.
There are however a number of glitches; farts, pops and whistles have crept on to the finished
article. One of which has Silver Fox exclaiming what the f**k was that, mid song.
|
The inclusion of the adlib and noises off, fit in with the DIY nature and impromptu
approach CrackTown have to their live shows.
This said, at times you don't feel the same level of attack, that mischievous
twinkling, witnessed at live performances.

Album Reviews - Dirty Days by Jaed on Instant Karma Records Reviewed By Steve Rudd
|
|
The Jaed entity is basically Vanessa Eve on vocals and guitar,
backed by a bassist and drummer.
It's primarily Vanessa's 'gig' as such, and she's clearly the driving force
behind all of these eleven songs. Vanessa grew up in Melbourne, but her
childhood wasn't a particularly rosy experience for her, especially when she
found herself living

Their tear-jerking and spine-chilling Friend Of The Night single is melodramatically

Album Reviews - Revolution EP (4-track demo) by Little Fish Reviewed By Steve Rudd

Julia Sophie might regard herself as being something of a Little Fish, but she's certainly got a grand talent and huge potential as she swims into the big, bad world of the music industry. Julia is a self-taught
British singer-songwriter who has had a hard time of it in her personal life, having had to endure
the torment of drug addiction, depression and a debilitating throat

Album Reviews - Graham Coxon - Love Travels At Illegal Speeds (EMI) Reviewed By Steve Rudd
|
|
Since leaving Blur, Graham has proved himself to be one hell of a rock god, and right
from the off with this mesmerising thirteen track album, the focus is on loud guitars and swaggering
rock 'n' roll trials and tribulations. Fittingly, the album-opening tune is the hugely popular
single release Standing On My Own Again - a bona-fide anthem in every respect.

Album Reviews - The Landaus - 5 Track Demo Reviewed By Steve Rudd

If the likes of Razorlight can take the nation by storm as they have, then so can these young upstarts from Hull. Each of these five tracks is a chart-hungry monster, packed to the hernia-inducing hilt with jaw-dropping melodies and soul-filled vocal performances that have the power not only to break one's fickle heart, but to effectively smash to smithereens.

Album Reviews - The Sesh 3 Compilation By Michelle Dee

I'm not going to review this collection compiled by DJ Mak -host of the Sesh

bands that appear on here previously on this site.
I listen to these bands most Tuesdays, and Sundays either live or through the demos played by Mak.

Album Reviews - Hazardous Chemistry By Andy Cornfoot Reviewed by Bekki Stephenson and Michelle Dee
|
|
Similarly to Andy's last album, Hazardous Chemistry takes you on a journey.
Lying somewhere between chilled out tunes and summer anthems, it is hard to put your
finger on one specific overall feel.
Each track leads perfectly on to the next, combining just enough similarity and
diversity which leaves you lingering for more.
A US vibe flows through the

Single Reviews - Morning Runner - Burning Benches (Parlophone) Reviewed By Steve Rudd

Slowly but surely these four lads are breaking into the big time with their anthemic Emo-edged Indie-Rock music.
Their sets in support of Coldplay's last tour naturally thrust them into the limelight, and now that
their stunning debut album - Wilderness Is Paradise Now - has stormed the charts, this band is fast
becoming one of the most famous and respected groups in the country.

Album Reviews - There are Angels by Rivers By Michelle Dee

Just seen Rivers (formerly The Rivers) opening this Tuesdays the Sesh at
