Larrikin Love playing at Adelphi was a very interesting idea for everyone that turned up to the gig: they're known to be a very fresh and promising new band, yet although they have a wide internet audience, they still have quite a lot to prove. Me, I'm not so sure that they won everyone over. Park and Ride did their best to rouse the crowd, and put in a lot of effort with their performance. And, even though they are well established and popular, they still got a quite relaxed response from a seemingly reluctant crowd.

This atmosphere seemed to continue to the beginning of Larrikin Love's set. Instead of the crazy carnival performance everyone was expecting, they just seemed to turn up on stage, and begin playing immediately. However, this didn't seem to be too much of a disadvantage, especially as their first song was On Sussex Downs. This is one of the more well known numbers across the bands internet fan base, and this was shown by the crowds' rapturous reaction. Though this first song got a great response, the band seemed a bit phased by it, especially singer Ed, who just seemed shyly giggle, almost in disbelief.

This was a stark contrast to how you actually expect him to be - especially as he plays a cowbell with a dolls arm attached!

Though the band are very fresh and individual, managing to switch from punk to ska and back to reggae and skiffle in just one short song, the same ease didn't seem to show in the performance itself. The first few songs seemed just like a private band rehearsal that just happened to have a large audience. There was very little audience interaction, and the performance seemed to lack energy.

There was just that little bit more something that would have made it from a good performance into a great one. Though this was a refreshing change from the usual try-hardness of most bands you see lately - till they're almost to the point of being something they're not - I did feel like we as the audience deserved a bit more of an effort. Was this just a middle of the tour can't be bothered gig?

As the set went on, singer Ed found his feet. His wild blue eyed stare got bluer and wilder, his moves more erratic and impulsive, and his vocals gained much more power and passion. It was clear to see how his passions for writing, literature and The Smiths formed Larrikin Love into the band they are. As soon as the crowd picked up on this, they got more into it too, leading guitarist Michael to strut his stuff, and really show everyone what he can do.
