Music Reviews
Sunday 17th September Aberfeldy Catherine Feeny and The Rocky Nest New Adelphi Club (2/2)
By Michelle Dee
(1/2), (2/2).

Aberfeldy raised the temperature another ten degrees and launched into a set of startlingly good folk/pop songs with an occasional dynamic electro twist. The numbers came thick and fast like the folksy Love is an arrow and 1970's. Very much as the earlier band had done Aberfeldy switch places throughout the thoroughly appreciated set.

From keys to pizzicato violin, then twin keys from both Ruth and Sarah, bassist Ken even gets in on the keyboard action.
All the while Murray keeps everyone together with strong drumming and the occasional percussive instrument.

I commented to my good friend Mark that he had a way to keep the beats true, the crowd engaged, without having to beat seven shades out of the kit. This I liked. Some songs make you sway, some make you sing, others urge you to get up and dance and if I only I had tonight. Next time you won't need to ask twice Riley.
Another good thing about seeing Aberfeldy in this intimate setting down De Grey Street is that you can really appreciate the craftsmanship in the lyrics.

We're all waiting for our millionaire in different ways Aberfeldy put this girlish desire in to perspective taking the shine of all the glitz and leaving you with the purest truth.
The poetic lyrics, the clever rhymes; this I also like. By time we get to recent single Hypnotised I am completely taken by the Edinburgh based band. The pride in their origin shines through the songs none more so than when the band play a tribute to a sadly deceased Scots broadcaster.
Having sadly missed most of the Eighties I have a penchant for the synthesizer and the plethora of sounds it can create. On the song Summer's Gone Aberfeldy take basic monochrome tones like might be found on a Spectrum 128K to tease and tantalise, add a sunny reggae feel, a smooth violin, and a crisp glock refrain repeated by Sarah and Ruth that catches both eye and ear.

They then build upon this, for later numbers, creating swimming swathes of synths that could comfortably hold their own at any Rubix Disco.
This I like too. Now we get to, where I wanted to be up dancing as, the title track from the album Whatever turns you on, rang out. Not to mention the soulful seventies funky vocals, dance floor rhythms and finger clicking beats of Uptight.
Aberfeldy went off stage to stand up ovations, then as the applause gathered momentum they returned for an encore. After the gig I was lucky enough to talk briefly with the entire band and even persuaded them to pose for a special group photo kindly taken by Lou from The Rocky Nest. Thank you.

I managed to get my hands on a copy of a live recording of their New York show in March this year at the very hip fashionista hotspot Pianos.
I also asked the very lovely Catherine Feeny signed a copy of her album Hurricane Glass not only for me, but for an absent friend.

Music Reviews - Friday 2nd June 06 - Outspoken Silence Jack Knife and Screaming Sorrow at The Ringside By Michelle Dee Photographs By Mo
In the last month I have spoken about trying to publicise different genres on thisisull.com so to this end I accepted the invitation from Outspoken Silence to the half term gig at The Ringside on Beverley Rd. First off I am not versed in the intricacies of the Emo genre, nor do I have any real knowledge about the subculture built around the Emo bands. But I can simply Read more...

Tonight was the night that Leeds came to Hull problem was not many turned up for the welcoming party. Sure enough Piper Club on Newland Avenue was peopled with a number of discerning music fans ready to witness the fine selection of bands chosen by the Silver Star/Raw Talent partnership. It also played host to a bunch of students who sounded like they were Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 1st June 06 - The Johnsons, Unless, The Everydays and special guests from Japan The Warm at The Adelphi By Michelle Dee Photographs By Mo
Thursday night saw four different live music acts playing the De Grey Street venue. The night was organised by Matt from The Johnsons and new management team Silver Star Media fronted by Gareth Jones. Their night was once again up against some fairly stiff competition in the form of The Paddingtons who were playing Staks Café Bar fifty Read more...

Music Reviews - Thursday 25th May 06 - The Beautiful South at The City Hall with support from Aberfeldy By Michelle Dee Photographs by Matt Rudd
Yesterday was a very special day. Around five o'clock on Thursday evening, I was listening to The Beautiful South sound check. The hall was a hive of activity with technicians climbing rope ladders to the gantries, erecting barriers at the front of the hall, and making ready for the first TBS gig at the city centre venue for over 16 years. I listened to the band running Read more...

Music Reviews - 21st April 06 - Chaser at The Bluebell Riverside Restaurant, Driffield By Steve Rudd
Chaser are a well-known band in Driffield, largely due to having been around for a few years now, and because they are mean purveyors of some truly awesome cover songs. Driffield, unfortunately, is pretty thin on the ground when it comes to great bands worth shouting about. Since the main venue in town, Mavericks nightclub, didn't renew its entertainments license, Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 2nd May 06 - The Sesh With Ivy Sins, Cherry Cob Cartel and The Blueslide Circle By Michelle Dee
This weeks Sesh night down the Linnet and Lark fell just after yet another bank holiday weekend. This meant that many regulars were spent up or still feeling the effects of partying till the wee small hours. I know my own weekend was full of drunken forays into various different pubs in the Avenues area. The highlight of my weekend was on Sunday night; yes the Sunday Sesh had Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 5th April 06 - John Copley, Afterglow and Sidewinder at Quayside By Emily
This relatively new night has been running at the Quayside for just over a month now- named Quintessential Sessions- with live bands and fine Indie tunes every week. However, this gig showed the best turn-out so far. Regardless of whether this was due to the bands individual followings or simply word of mouth, it still proved that this night Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 19th April 06 - The Peasants, The Blackouts and The Landaus at Quayside Quintessential Sessions By Michelle Dee
It was only a week ago when I met The Peasants for the first time but I had heard them being played by Alan on Raw Talent a month or two back. Also Steve Rudd had reviewed their CD on this site and as often happens round these parts I had been bumping into Jody, singer for The Peasants, regularly on the Avenues. Tonight, I was determined to see them. Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 5th April 06 - Heat 10, Best Original Band at The Springhead By Anita Blakeston
Heat Ten - The one with Violets and Right Handed Trousers ... Intriguing band names was the order of the night. I have met the 59 Violets many times and always wanted to know where the name came from. I don't know Franks Right Hand Trouser but in their case I dare not ask ... something to do with trying to get dressed when drunk? Tonik have been Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 29nd March 06 - Heat 9, Best Original Band at The Springhead By Anita Blakeston
Heat Nine - Turn left at Spaghetti Junction for Hollywood town ... Tinsel Town it ain't in Hull but I reckon our entertainment is just as glam and glossy as theirs. We had our very own A listers performing - our very own Brad Pitt alias David Elf, our very own Danii Minogue on bass and Meg Ryan on keyboards....not to mention Magnum PI as MC. Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 25th April - Swellbellys, Assert, C-Squat and Undefeated at The Ringside By Dick Spring Photo Gallery By Mo
When it rains it pours, as the saying goes, and this was very much true of Hull this evening, with big shows on at pretty much every proper Hull venue. Ringside weighed in with a heavyweight punk show, literally, with the monster that is a Swellbellys and Assert tour, their first together in over three years. Kicking off tonight's proceedings rather early, it has to be said, were Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 12th April 06 - Tarifa at Quayside Quintessential Sessions By Michelle Dee
I have known of Tarifa since they opened the Renegade Writers Live Event at Ringside last year. Since then they have been hard at work practicing, writing and strengthening the ties within the band. Tarifa recently played at Music Man but tonight was the first time I'd seen them since last year. After a delayed start (they didn't take Read more...

Music Reviews - Sunday Sesh 2nd April By Michelle Dee
To kick things off we had a few numbers from Mr. Baggott. He started with a new one I didn't catch the title then his usual Blur cover. The popular Turismo tune Skegness came next which went down well with the knowledgeable crowd. One person I think it was Rich Turismo was even heard to exclaim Amazing. He finished off with In Bed Read more...

Music Reviews - Wednesday 22nd March 06 - Heat 8, Best Original Band at The Springhead By Anita Blakeston
