The Yo-Yo night at The Welly Club on Beverley Road is slap bang in the middle of its most hectic period what with all the students back in place and the host of bands that are lined up to play it's Live Lab. Tonight saw a band from just across the bridge share a small and compact stage with some up and coming chancers from down south. Barton's own Fifty- Nine Violets are the type of band who hold a unique stance in the current climate of this countries music scene.

A scene that is overwhelmed by haircuts and has an emphasis of style over substance; preferably of the sinister keyboard led 80's variety.

There are no skinny ties or juddering drumming on show tonight. Just raw power in the shape of their punchy rock orientated set, which is characterised by Digsy's accomplished vocals. They come across sounding as lucid and concise as ever, quite rare for a rock vocal. The crowd reaction is extremely positive as well, which is no mean feat considering the predominately Indie clientele, although the flock of Bartonians were always going to give them some boozy additional support. Dirty Water is an exceptional riff-heavy highlight, performed with a lot of zest and conviction, from a band who are quite evidently playing the type of music they adore.

Their own take on The Beatles Eleanor Rigby is a delightfully menacing way to close the set.

Top of the bill tonight is The Mardous who are yet another one of those Alan McGee endorsed Poptones groups making their way to our fair city. The Welly Club is almost becoming a home from home for Poptones label mates judging by the amount that have bounded through the doors and entertained us of an evening. This threesome is no exception.

There is something quite anthemic and airy about their songs, with standout track Revolution Over The Telephone illustrating their knack for a melody, in a scrubbed up and more coherent Libertines fashion.

The longer the set went on the more the assembled public appeared to be captivated, apart from the Pete Doherty clone who spent the entire length of the gig leaning against the barrier with his back to the stage. This plain rudeness was counteracted by the girl who got up on stage for a little jig, shared a can with singer Ross and then promptly showered him with its contents: A declaration of enjoyment if ever I saw one. www.fiftynineviolets.com www.themardous.co.uk
