They informed me he had played a mix of old skool jungle, some dark d n b and thrown in some reggae as well. Always fine, get the crowd going they got the pace right, said one. Absolutely unbelievable, said another, the after party is gonna be really good. Just before we were leaving a guy next to me said Best drum n bass night in Hull, which was quickly amended to best ever.

I had seen a few familiar faces in the crowd and had joined in the kind of loose, laid back dance they were doing. I looked towards other who topless, were involved in weaving limbs in a series of complicated movements. I also noticed that there seemed to be an equal mix of males and females moving to the unusual sounds. It is unusual because it has crossover appeal. It seems to ignore ethnicity, gender, social status and brings everyone together. For a moment I think I captured some of that buzz from the deep penetrating sounds that really shook the club.

From time to time brief respite would come in the form of euphoric high-pitched vocals, on the records; often witnessed within house tunes. Having listened to trance during my late teens and mid-twenties I was intrigued to find out that Paul Oakenfold, a hero of mine, had been a source of inspiration for Grooverider. As I talked with more people after the club, I became aware of a kind of patois that people were using to communicate. I particularly noticed the use of the word fair as a term of agreement or acknowledgement; often repeated accompanied with a nod of the head to convey enthusiasm.

A typical conversation would go... Who are you, what are you doing here? I'm Michelle from thisisull. Fair, fair, would come the response. Beats were phat, no surrender, scratching the plastic, melting the decks, tearing up the floor. Above all everything was fair. This was my first d n b night and I have to admit, I am hoping to get to the next one that the Shinobi soldiers were already talking about excitedly as we trooped out the club. Big up Ray Keith!
