Music Live Band Nightclubs Reviews

There was a second female member of Ruth's Project: but apart from standing up and singing one short song, which she dedicated to Hull, she was very much an outsider during the rest of the set.

I felt perhaps she could have been doing backing vocals or harmonies; even banging something to keep time would have given her something to do. I was uncomfortable watching her on stage not being part of the group, and I would suggest that she in turn felt uncomfortable for the same reason.
The male guitarist flexed his vocal chords and delivered his own melodic version of Chilli Peppers' Underneath the Bridge with panache. He has definite stage presence; a vocal capacity, that could see him chasing the coat tails of the likes of Steve Reed and in time perhaps the likes of Tom Ritchie also.

I must mention the guy that came up out of the blue and sang Happy happy joy joy taken from the Ren and Stimpy cartoons.
It was a heart-felt rendition that brought memories of the truly vile characters flooding back. Bizarre but brilliant.
The last group to play the main-stage were Hull band One Skin Wonder (a smoking reference I am told) Yet another female lead served up a Blondie style vocal with a hint of MrZ. They were widely appreciated by the crowds who danced to every highly energized number.

This was the six-month old group's second gig and sadly the Welly: sound let them down. Lou and Ryan on lead and rhythm guitars respectively and Scott on bass could only be heard when stood up close and personal; the musicians once again commented on the fact they were unable to hear themselves on stage.
This said, they delivered a varied set that borrowed from indie-rock and ska pools of sound. The angst in such songs like Lost my Brain and Life is Hard didn't really ring true. Kirsty kept smiling and the tentatively woven spell was broken.

If you sing about pain, disillusionment and isolation you have to show that depth of feeling and really get in touch with those emotions. The longer pieces seemed to work better; especially the piece with the false end, the sound was able to take on shape and character.
The finale Way Through was a speed-fest of thick guitars and Ben's heavy drums; Lou was mesmerizing, as his bloodstained fingers flew up and down the fret-board. Yeah, he was pretty awesome and took every opportunity to show of his deft skills. One Skin Wonder, played on the infamous Adelphi stage last December.
They should now progress nicely on to venues such as the White Room and Biarritz where their youthfulness would appeal to the clientele there in. In time they could play the bigger venues but need to finely tune their performance and create definition first. Kirsty came of the stage totally hyped and announced; I bloody enjoyed myself to her waiting fans.
The afternoon spent inside the Welly: in the company of all these young gifted artists was reassuring. The recent changes to the curriculum caused a stir in certain circles, but it seems that musical talent can be honed and then nurtured again at college age using national organisations like Access to Music:. Yet again the future of British music appears safe in the hands and hearts of the younger generation.
