The winter's bitter chill began to make my hands weak and numb as I walked along the street in the pitch black.
Whilst listening to my walkman I began to ask myself what the hell was I doing?
When arriving at the Welly Club's large purple and white front a sense of reassurance came into play.
The crowd backed onto the street, by now I began to realise this tsunami fund raiser gig was
already a huge a success and better things had yet to come.
|
|
|
Charging a modest three pounds fifty pence per head and looking around at the scale of the cue
it was obvious a lot of money was going to be raised.
|
|
First up on the evenings line up without any messing around Face to Feet blasted into the energetic
and generic hardcore.
Although what the group is trying to achieve has been accomplished a hundred times before and it
goes without saying a stench of Sick of it All and Hatebreed looms towards you, you
can't deny the groups energy and honesty being highly enjoyable and entertaining.
|
Already a small following was paying homage to the group through a vast array of scissor kicks
and violent hardcore moves and I believe it's the first time in a long while that any band has
managed to get a crowd dancing so early on in the evening.
Appreciation for the audience, organisers and other bands was made clear and the band exited the
stage leaving us prepared for more.
Obviously the evening was to fit to a tight time schedule, The Favours aid Face To Feet to remove
equipment and shuffle their own hardware onto the stage.
What came next was one of the most entertaining sets I have ever seen a band perform.
Keeping the crowd interaction to a bare minimum, The Favours deliver one of the best
half hours of the evening.
Intertwining dirty, raw manic guitar sounds and powerful drum beats that creates a
sound like Radiohead's The Bends and interspersing a hint of The Cranberries punked up,
The Favours have coined their own music on their own terms.
It was so refreshing to see a band as diverse as The Favours win over the crowd.
Looking around I could see jaws thud to the floor as we learnt this was the quartets
first performance as up to date line up.
A garage rock pleasure that leave you wanting more and with a personal favourite
performance of Kill you easily lose yourself in the post grunge sound a definite ten out of ten.
|
|
|
Another encouraging set was soon to follow as Diverse Unit found themselves in front of
a large following they had obviously gathered over their past performance dates.
Reminding us just what punk rock should be like, the greasy mohawked four piece snarled
and spat their Anti- Flag style down through the microphones into the punters ears.
|
With stand out tracks such as War on Youth and the bratty uncompromising Brainwashed
it was reassuring to see punk rock of this kind is far, far from dead.
The young age of the group only adds further to the enjoyment of the bands set and stood
watching I began to understand just how powerful they can actually become.

Music Reviews - 10,000 Things at Jaz Bar - 26th October 04 By Caroline Murphy

So what do the music magazines know about the sensitive side of a group of sexed up 20-some-Things!
Their stage show gives anything but that impression, but close-up and personal in the smaller
venues of Hull Jaz Bar and Shrewsbury Buttermarket, I can tell a different story.
