Sweet n Sour has a new home, a new night and a different feel. In order to take advantage of the Saturday night crowd the Sweet n Sour promoters have moved to Silhouette on Park Street.

As I walked up Princes Ave I heard shouting then saw in the distance a brawl breaking out. I watched despondently as I saw a figure being repeatedly kicked on the ground.
More people seemingly had some quarrel with this unfortunate individual and joined in. Shouts and screams, echoed thinly in the cold night air.

I decided on taking a detour and left the violence behind. I progressed to Park Street not in high spirits but with a watchful eye on the dark streets of Hull. All this did not put me in the best mood for my first Sweet n Sour at Sils.
I arrived and went inside the familiar club. I had four aims tonight; they were to assess the venue, to capture the atmosphere, meet with new female DJ crew Sleaze Queens and photograph the two bands on the bill.

I was looking forward to Last People after witnessing their psychedelic signature sound at The Sesh two weeks previously. As for The Morphines, I had only heard them on The Sesh CD.
To my dismay the usual chill out bar was not opened. Not a great start so I wandered to the main bar adjacent to the dance-floor. The tables are too low, the chairs a nightmare: unattractive and un-invitingly arranged. People are constantly tripping over them, including me. I spoke to at least two people who had nearly had their legs taken out by those flaming seats.

The rock n roll disco of the Sleaze Queens chased in out of the large photo discs suspended from the ceiling. They are the first to my knowledge all girl DJ duo in Hull, they promise non-stop erotic cabaret and they deliver in a professional way. Just starting on the scene they are hoping to pick up more Djing gigs at venues around Hull.

Les belle femme de musique can also be seen entertaining the sophisti-cats at the Lamp on a Tuesday. Sultry Kat and sparkly Mel look every bit punk rock chic, as they show off a wide range of tunes including fewer or more oddities. In time they could start hosting a night in their own right and prove once again the Hull scene is not adverse to new visionaries.
The Morphines opened the bands tonight; stepping onto a gloomy stage- the lighting wasn't particularly great I had rather hoped some of the lighting rig would be updated- they played to an increasingly growing crowd.

Kicking off with Culprit they showed of their particular hard-edged indy punk fusion. Having heard this track a number of times familiarity has brought me to conclude that this is there strongest and most accessible track.
The four-piece played a spiky set of late 70s style punk rock with provoking lyrical content. Lines such as what ya gonna do when the world catches up to you get the pulses racing.

The band sounded disjointed. Each member had moments where they dominated the sound except the drummer whose pounding came across muffled. The lead singer has enough power in his voice to split eardrums - seriously this boy can deafen you. He should come with a health warning. During the song containing the line meet by the river bank I feared for my ears even though they have become hardened to most bands rancour.
