Remixes, done by rhythm guitarist Chris, recently received airplay in Australia; it
seems OZ is down with the Southside Freedom Fighters.
A nine track CD featuring some new original tracks and remixes is available from the
band and sounds especially good, played at full volume, whilst driving through open country.
I can't possibly go through every band that played today, but I will endeavour to do so.
|
|
|
Blueslide Circle is fast becoming the name to drop in discerning circles.
They have taken the now pervasive rock n roll sound and added a seventies blues element.
Their latest demo CD, All Blues 'n' No Dinner, features three quality tracks from the rising stars.
The sweetest time signature shift on Love Is Too Little and some strong vocals during
Walkin Women make this, a much talked about demo.
|
|
The new recording of Hideaway sounds even better than it did on the Sesh CD. The highlight
in a Blueslide Circle set is when the drum solo kicks in; he's good, really good.
|
|
Next up was Sidewinder a band that has been on the Hull scene for a long while now.
I was dismayed to hear, half an hour before they were due to go on, that their number had been halved.
Only two members, doing an acoustic set? I waited with more than a little
apprehension for the, seldom heard, acoustic Sidewinder to unfurl.
Now, it has been said that the mark of a good band is how they perform without all the
electronic doo-hickeys to bolster the sound.
|
|
|
The two bravely stood side by side and began to play.
The 150 or more audience were treated to what will go down as one of the musical highlights of the year.
I kid you not.
|
|
The chords rang out clear as a bell, the vocal harmonies could be heard from behind the bar.
Christian and Graham showed their considerable talent and overcame real fears to produce
the most beautiful acoustic set of songs.
Every festival is known for having that spell-bounding moment where everything slows
down and crystallizes to perfect clarity.
This was such a moment; I stood in a pool of orange light by the stage and felt glad to be alive.
A lot of people that day were more than a little surprised at how this other Sidewinder dimension shone.
Take nothing away from the rest of the band but I do hope we get to hear the acoustic version again soon.
|
Soldiering on, having danced to every band so far Ernest reported for duty; they were due on just before tea.
Once again they didn't disappoint.
With the bubbles and notes floating effortlessly twixt and between curls of cinnamon scented incense
I was once again transported to that other place.
No amount of heckling, or however many CDs thrown in my direction were going to ruin this moment for me.
The incense glowed for a lost friend and like a searchlight of hope and the promise of a better
future Ernest burned brilliant as a beachhead beacon.
|
|
|
Next up, Hull's flagship band The Landaus, obviously fed up with the lack of people dancing,
they encouraged everyone on to the floor and to get close to the stage.
Some did and lasted a few songs but eventually something spirited them away leaving the wide empty spaces.
Some say that Sweet but True is their best track, while others plum for the heavily promoted
What ya Cryin For. Songs like Make ya move and a new one possibly called Two Can or
Toucan stand out as well.
The latter being the only song that bassist Gaz sings on.
With Danny taking lead it's a blistering blast of Landaus clamour.

On a Thursday afternoon I stood outside Debenhams in town waiting for the minibus to arrive from Hedon.
Today I was travelling to London to see Ernest headline in Camden.

Sal Paradise at The White Room - Saturday 19th March 05 By Anthony Baine

This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com.
Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music
scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now.
About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh

Saturday 12th March 05 - Soulflame at the White Room By Michelle Dee
|
|
Soulflame have strong Puddle of Mudd influences in both sound and song construction.
The E.P. is more melodic and measured than the live performance.
Nic's vocals are at times quite balladic. He reaches for the high notes with a fresh
enthusiasm

Why the hell do I do these things, it's not to get my skirt pulled up by some drunken goat
called Mark that's for sure.
If this had been in an office and not a nightclub then I would have you up for sexual
harassment make no mistake. Did I see you go around lifting up other girls' apparel?

Music Reviews - Friday 4th March 05 - The Ga*Ga*s at Asylum By Andy Dykes, Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
|

Its rock-a-rama at Asylum: tonight. Three bands, one bill, all about the rock.
First up, Disarm:.
Their cover of New Order's Blue Monday is superb, harking back to Marilyn Manson
and Dope's covers of new romantic greats.
Disarm:'s own material is intricate

Monday 28th February - Black Orchid, Diverse Unit, Second To Last, The Regicides at the Ringside By Harry Slater
|

It's cold tonight, not as cold as it was this morning, but cold enough to complain about.
The garish decoration of The Ringside makes a welcome change from the browns and greys of a city thawing out.
The outside door, as per usual, scares the crap out of me as it slams shut

Sweet n Sour has a new home, a new night and a different feel. In order to take advantage of the Saturday night crowd the Sweet n Sour promoters have moved to Silhouette on Park Street.
As I walked up Princes Ave I heard shouting then saw in the distance a brawl breaking out.
