As the set goes on, the sound swings around to a more British sensibility and
they remind me, somewhat bizarrely, of the Inspiral Carpets.
Unfortunately, as it gets to the middle of the set it starts to get a
little bland. I decide to go to the toilet.
Silhouette's toilets are weird. I approach the urinal, and as I lob it out to piss I'm treated to a violin concerto over the speakers. To the right of me this guy sidles up.
|
|
|
"Ey,' he whispers to me, "Are yerra reporter?"
"Not exactly," I say, giving it a little shake before I store it.
"Well, are yer writin' about the band?"
"Possibly," I say, and I begin to move towards the door.
"Well, yer gonna write a good review about The Shine aren't yer? They're fuckin' good them, mate."
I smile, wash my hands and then I head for the door. As I walk down the stairs, an image of the British Gas ad on Beverley road pops into my head.
|
I return to watch The Shine. Things aren't looking promising for the band; as I say, they're good, but there's just something...
The lead singer takes the mike and shouts, "This is a fuckin' love song called: I Don't Mind".
They launch into a song that completely eschews the sound that they have mined up to this
point and introduces an unexpected element of funk into the proceedings.
|
|
|
It has a great ba-ba-bum guitar line that is begging to be backed by a horn section.
The song is so different that it manages to encompass a Freddie's Dead style bassline
with a sense of the pace that almost could've been lifted from Live and Let Die.
|
|
It's a sound that I really wasn't expecting form them and it could just be the sound that separates the band from the rest of the pack. They return to their more well-trodden sound to finish the set, but it's that one song which impresses me and stands out in my mind.
I think The Shine could be a band at a crossroads. While there's no doubting their musical expertise, there's always a danger that a band can be too good; if you've completely mastered a style of music that is so familiar to so many people, then maybe it's the more obscure aspect of a sound that will finally bring the attention of the wider world.
|
I would love to see The Shine go and nick themselves a little bit of the
Booker T and MG's soul - the bouncy Atlantic/Stax sound pioneered and
played by Steve Cropper.
I think that it would really suit them, and having a lead singer that likes to
dance about would really bring it alive.
Now I know that you're sat there thinking - yep, I'm talking to you three that
have the attention span to read this far - You talk some crap J, but this takes
the pile, but hey, fuck it, it's just the way I see it and hear it.
And one last thing: I know it's petty but I can't say or think of the name The Shine
without thinking of Liam Gallagher using his vowel stretching capabilities to full effect,
y'know, The Sha-yiiiiiiiiine, something which disturbs me greatly.
Look, I said it was petty, so there you go.

Midge Ure at Pocklington Arts Centre - Wednesday 13th April 05 By Steve Rudd
|
|
Let me first just say that the Pocklington Arts Centre is a truly fantastic venue, and it's
quite amazing that such a quality venue graces a town that is so small.
Nestling perfectly to one side of the town's charming Market Square, this venue
is a theatre, concert hall and

Sal Paradise at The White Room - Saturday 19th March 05 By Anthony Baine

This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com.
Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music
scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now.
About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh

Soulflame have strong Puddle of Mudd influences in both sound and song construction.
The E.P. is more melodic and measured than the live performance.
Nic's vocals are at times quite balladic. He reaches for the high notes with a fresh

Why the hell do I do these things, it's not to get my skirt pulled up by some drunken goat

If this had been in an office and not a nightclub then I would have you up for sexual
harassment make no mistake. Did I see you go around lifting up other girls' apparel?

Music Reviews - Friday 4th March 05 - The Ga*Ga*s at Asylum By Andy Dykes, Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers

Its rock-a-rama at Asylum: tonight. Three bands, one bill, all about the rock.
First up, Disarm:.
Their cover of New Order's Blue Monday is superb, harking back to Marilyn Manson
and Dope's covers of new romantic greats.
Disarm:'s own material is intricate

Monday 28th February - Black Orchid, Diverse Unit, Second To Last, The Regicides at the Ringside By Harry Slater

It's cold tonight, not as cold as it was this morning, but cold enough to complain about.
The garish decoration of The Ringside makes a welcome change from the browns and greys of a city thawing out.
The outside door, as per usual, scares the crap out of me as it slams shut
