Tuesday 5th July - Dirty Dreamers, The Saved and Substitute at the Sesh contd
By Michelle Dee
|
prev page
|
Next on tonight's bill was The Saved, a four piece band from Lincoln. Two things immediately struck me about this band, they were, the small stature of the lead-singer and the presence of a female drummer. The front man was dwarfed on either side by both the bass player; a strapping six footer, and the guitarist; who was just nicely proportioned.
Dynamic riffs combined with an electro bass sound creating a fusion of fizzing melodies.
The vocal style had a certain American air during the song User combining with a laid back rolling,
country rock feel, which all added to the worldly mix of music and clientele.
|
|
|
Commanding riffs open This is the Love a song about paedophiles. Despite the controversial subject matter the song is well received by the ever increasing crowd.
|
|
Once again the Shaftesbury bass comes to the fore during Purification very satisfyingly.
Turning to a more readily recognisable vocal style Far from Here sits side by side with its coke snorting cousins in rock n roll Elysium. The addition of a second vocal from the damn fine drummer adds layers to the vocals seldom heard at the Sesh due to the dirth of girl bands in Hull at the moment.
C'mon girls there must be a Janis Joplin, Toni Halliday or even a Sam Cooke out there ready to show these
men real vocal gymnastics.
To keep the crowd on their toes The Saved include a false ending to one of the later
songs then came right back with a ballsy finale.
|
A fine debut from the Lincoln band.
Mak plays Blue Sand from the DJ box and almost on cue I spot the familiar face of
Gaz lead singer of the Withernsea band.
Apparently he and The Landaus have given up seeing REM at KC Stadium to see the
Dirty Dreamers headline tonight at the Sesh.
A tune from SideWinder follows and as I gaze around the sea of faces I spy the charismatic
Christian, the SideWinder front man sipping a cold beer at the bar.
|
Moments later the Dreamers open with Disease a track of their new CD to rapturous applause.
Ash has developed stage presence and an acute awareness of performance in order to play the consummate front man.
The new single Overload takes of with a Herculean charge which features one of the best damn choruses this
side or any side of the M62.
During Three lines, Ash climbs into the voracious crowd offering the mic up to all.
Having witnessed this three times previously it seems to have become just as much a part of the
stage routine as his jerking body movements.
The band then beat the hell out of You Decide with Ash once again testing a tambourine to its limits.
|
|
|
Style Ambition follows as Baz takes guitar riffing to new heights.
Ever versatile the mood changes as slower more sensuous sound journeys are taken.
This emotive sound is ably backed up by Keith on bass as the pair began a moody intro with
Chris's Bonham-esque syncopation punctuating the smooth melodies.
The band has come on in leaps and bounds since late last year making them justifiably the high flyers they are to date.
They have grown in stature and style, developing their accomplished nay, all-conquering rock n roll with care
and attention to detail.
|
|
During C'mon Get Real the dreamers attempt to win the heart of every female in the place and start riotous fires in those of the men.
|
During Inside my head, the crowd are going berserk as all four Dirty Dreamers shine on and
of the Sesh stage; Ash has taken another brief foray into the seething mass of fans.
Euphoric and triumphant the crowd screaming for more they do a reprise of Three Lines.
The previous release proving it still has longevity long even with the new one vying for attention.
|
|
With hardly need for invitation a mass of bodies invade the stage as every Dreamers fan holler
the chorus at Keith, Baz, Ash and Chris and anyone else who happens to find themselves within a ten mile radius of the Princes Avenue pub.
Dirty Dreamers are definitely making July their month which has culminated in
Radio 1 playing new single Overload on the last Sunday of the month.
Deserved nationwide airplay and recognition for another Hull band has to mean we are moving in the right direction.

Music Reviews - Friday 20th May - The Music with Youth Group at Asylum By Andy Dykes
|
|
It's hard to believe that Asylum at Hull University Union could be full of students,
all suited, booted and blind drunk celebrating at the end of year ball.
Now that the summer break has hit and the university is all but devoid of students,
it's great to see that there is still a huge crowd at the venue tonight to welcome The Music.

Music Reviews - Pozition Night Club Rock Night - Wednesday 18th May 05 By Michelle Dee
|
|
After witnessing another fantastic performance by Ernest at the Adelphi last Wednesday I
decided to accept an invitation to the Pozition night club on George Street.
I paid the three pounds entry fee and received in return a little ticket informing
me that I was female; so far so good.
I walked into a large industrial style arena

Music Reviews - Saturday 28th May - The Rakes at Yo-Yo - Jumping For Victory By Andrew Coe 6 Page Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
|
|
NME favourites The Rakes came to Hull and conquered with their choppy,
wire-like guitar riffs and a front man who can't keep still.
If The Rakes frontman Alan Donohoe were still at school, he'd be
told off repeatedly for fidgeting in class. For the duration of the band's 12-song set
at Yo-Yo at The Welly, Hull on Saturday night

Music Reviews - Saturday 21st May 05 - Under The Influence Presents Mystery Jets at the New Adelphi By Emily

It is not very often you find a band that excites you, I mean really excites you.
Yet it seems that the Mystery Jets might just be the band for the job.
As painfully honest as it is the Hull scene has needed a kick up the ass for some time now.
While still maintaining the stunning talent on show in pubs and clubs all over the city,
a firm kick is needed to rid it of the Indie addiction and mullet pretension.

Music Reviews - Saturday 14th May 05 - Power Metal UK at Ringside - Pitiful Reign, Soulflame, Infobia, Humanity and Deliverance. By Michelle Dee
|
|
I shan't try and compare the acts that performed at the Power Metal UK night with any other well-known bands of similar genre. I have no desire to try and talk authoritatively on a school of music I haven't followed since the early days of Terrorvision and Silverchair.
However, Deliverance the headlining band, from Italy, have definite

Music Reviews - Saturday 1st May - Rock the Vote at The Adelphi By Lucy Kynman
|
|
Last night's amalgamation of Elobo and Funky for Rock the Vote, dedicated to raising funds
and showing the local area's support for the green party and candidate Martin Deane,
was a great success!
Green being the theme for the night, can I just say well done to Alice; when it comes to
creativity and a unique sense for interior design you never fail to hit the mark!

On arrival at the front of the club I find a queue waiting to get in, so this must be some
measure of the demand for this show tonight (oh, the power of hype) though a top ten
single can't have helped the headline band's cause at all!
It was indeed packed out, it took me twenty minutes to get a drink, which is something
that needs to be addressed by

Music Reviews - Thursday 21st April - Ernest, Rumpus, Scaramanga Six and Fonda 500 at the Adelphi Happy as a Sandman By Michelle Dee

What a fantastic night.
No really, if you weren't there then you missed out on seeing some of the finest
bands the other side of sanity.
The monthly local music magazine, oft slated in its own backyard landed a
winning formula tonight.
Ernest, who everyone should experience, continue to be spine
tingling and achingly beautiful.
Last night they grabbed
