Tuesday 25th January - Mike (The Bonnits) and The Last People on Earth at The Sesh

Quite saddened by the fact that this was going to be my last trip to The Sesh in a while,
I hesitantly vacated the cars warm interior, knowing full well as soon as my battered
trainers hit the cold, coarse concrete, the evenings egg timer would be turned and
I would be left trying to slow down the sands of time in order to appreciate the live music.
As soon as I entered The Linnet and Lark however, the feeling of just wanting to
enjoy music and leaving all other thoughts behind came rushing back.
|
|
A comfortable atmosphere was already present; the audience with its friendly familiar faces
was by now a modestly large gathering and the DJ kept us up to date as usual, with local music,
pumping through the PA.
A one nil victory for Liverpool sounded the air horn for the music to commence and with that
Mike from The Bonnits began his very special acoustic set. Consisting of a handful of
songs including a beautiful version of Damien Rice's Cannon Ball, Mike churned through
the songs like warm butter, using the husky voice of which he carries to cut deep.
|
|
The frantic and erratic strumming of his steel stringed acoustic complemented the singer's
enthusiastic croak. Later on in the Damien Rice cover he uses the strings as if it were a
harp to sooth and calm Mike's voice in order to create a more sullen tone.
With a style as moody as a French teacher and with a voice as husky as a bear, Mike from
The Bonnits gave us a glimpse of what he and the rest of his band have to offer with
their arsenal of bluesy rock songs.
|
|
From out of nowhere last night came three very hairy men and one shiny bald man and without
any further ado, The Linnet and Lark welcomed in the warmest way possible
The Last People on Earth to the stage. What was to then come was one of the most
energetic and entertaining sets of my life. The Last People on Earth boomed into their
atmospheric and crazy songs as if they were actually The Last People on Earth calling
out for anyone else left to hear them.
|
|
With songs entitled Space Suit and Broadway you can appreciate the diversity the band aims
to achieve, with the latter song being a story about a trip to a boutique on Broadway
with lyrics that juxtapose the title Daddy had Cancer, mummy was a table top dancer,
you find yourself questioning how in fact this mad group would be best viewed from.
Further more the lead singer laughs at Jack Blacks attempts at being the wackiest larger
than life front man and then adds extra screams for good measure.
The drummer puts animal from The Muppet's through his paces by throwing his whole body
at the kit and demanding the most moving beats and grooves possible.

So what do the music magazines know about the sensitive side of a group of sexed up 20-some-Things!
Their stage show gives anything but that impression, but close-up and personal in the smaller
venues of Hull Jaz Bar and Shrewsbury Buttermarket, I can tell a different story.
