The band take to the stage and blast it out, no messing. Lloyd throws a rose he had tucked behind
his ear into the crowd, and Tom nonchalantly sucks on a cig.
There's hardly any gaps between the songs, just a series of increasingly tighter tracks,
woven into one big beautiful cacophony.
There's an effortless quality about the band, and in between the second and third songs, Tom apologises
for being a bit worse for wear, not that you'd notice because the band are so in tune with each other that they never miss a beat. They prove why they are the hottest thing to come to come out of Hull since the pattie.
|
Their new single, 50 to a £ is a bona fide classic in the making.
It swings in on a God Save the Queen guitar line before metamorphosing into a
breezy ska flecked tune. Tom's singing No one seems to care, - strangely apt
for Hull - and I can picture the whole front row of the Glastonbury crowd at
the pyramid stage singing along to it.
They deliver it to us faultlessly, with a swagger that Pete Doherty would
swap Kate Moss for.
I look around the crowd, and there are people around that I never thought for a
million years would come to a gig like this.
A woman in a green dress introduces herself as Leanne, and she tells me that this
is the first time she's seen the band, but she thinks that they are
fantastic, fuckin' fantastic, aren't they? Are you writin' this down?
|
I am, I tell her, and just next to me there's this big-arsed chav guy banging his head and jumping up and down like a schoolgirl. He knocks my arm, which makes me write in strange spidery letters that seem to creep along the page.
When Panic Attack is played, the crowd goes fuckin' mental, singing along so loud that they almost drown Tom's vocals out. I'm approached by four or five people all telling me how great they think The Paddingtons are.
Are you with the Hull Daily Mail? one of them asks.
|
|
Fuck that, I reply. You don't seriously think that that Hull Daily Fail would be able to get its shit together to do a proper article about this band do you? They don't have a fuckin' clue about what's going on in this city.
I look back at the stage and Tom's striding about like a cat looking to piss somewhere in order to mark his territory.
Someone in the band makes a remark about inviting some proper musicians on to the stage,
and then they are joined by a brass section, which also happens to be The Supatones,
another Hull band. What the fuck is this?
|
The guitars are joined by the horns, kicking out a big fat-arsed groove. It's an absolute monster sound and the crowd, already wetting themselves, just fuckin' wig out. It's a fantastic noise, a laid-back, infectious groove that adds a whole other dimension to The Paddingtons sound. Every single person in The Ringside is completely gob-smacked and the band clean up, the tunes folding in on themselves, pulling the crowd this way and that.
After the gig is finished the lads exit the stage and leave the crowd awestruck. But the lads don't jump in a taxi or go backstage; they head outside to have a drink and a chat with their families and friends.
|
|
So I'm outside, stood there letting the breeze run over my forehead, nursing a fresh pint, and as I
watch the people filter outside I'm pretty sure that they're all thinking the same thing as
I am: I can't wait for that fuckin' album to come out...

People - Jim Muir Slideshow By Michelle Dee

It's the packaging that catches the eye first that and the fact you have to slice open the CD envelope with
a sharp implement.
Due to the popularity of the first EP, I have only the second two before me.
The Slideshow are storytellers first and foremost. Jim Muir began writing the songs during 2000 and 2001.

People, Interviews - Interview with Tokyo Dragons By Michelle Dee
|
|
Tokyo dragons are definitely not like The Smiths, lets just clear that one up.
They play a brand of loud ballsy U.S. rock circa 1995, maybe like G.n'R. or
Aerosmith with a bit of Kiss thrown in.
It's been a while since I checked out the mainstream rock scene.
These guys have been going for four years and hail from N.W. London

They look like The Clash used to. They look like The Stone Roses' evil twins.
They look like a gang.
And they are as tight as a gang, finishing each other's sentences and putting across their
points individually, knowing that they speak for the band as a whole.
Acting as spokesman Lloyd says What I fuckin' hate about music magazines is

My name is Ellie Beill. When asked by thisisUll.com to write an

But here goes ...
The property market has always fascinated me.

So I guess

I walk into Asylum in the middle of a soundcheck.
