There's just one thing that I will ask though - would it be possible to get in a feedback soaked guitar in for a couple of numbers? It may be some sort of ethic or gimmick within the band to rely on an acoustic guitar so much, but there are a couple of tracks that I would love to hear backed by a wiry, discordant Fender Jazzmaster or something. I could imagine them with a big MC5 Kick out the jams, kinda sound. After the gig I have a quick chat with Danny, the lead singer, who's somehow got word from some numbty head that I've slagged him off, even though the article that I wrote hasn't been published yet.

Jeezus, I'm thinking, here we fuckin' go... It's quite a strange experience - it's the first time that my writing has directly affected someone. It's something that I'll have to get used to I suppose; when you're writing about other people's work - music, film, art, whatever - you're sticking your head above the barricade and just waiting to get hit by a big chunk of shrapnel. Oh well, that's writing I suppose. The only advice I've ever used when doing this shit is from Roy Walker, former presenter of Catchphrase and unappreciated modern guru. Say what you see, he used to say, and that's what I try and do. The way I figure it is that I'm gonna cop shit for it at some point, especially seeing as I'm an opinionated gob-shite that changes his opinion every five minutes - thus making me difficult to keep up with and almost impossible to argue with - but fuck it, I'll have to invest in that can of pepper spray and napalm so I can hose down any hostiles... Anyway, after expelling all the images of war and horror and torture from my mind, I grab Lloyd, the bass player from The Paddingtons, so we can have a chat.

So, you're back in Hull again, how weird is that? Hull is a bit odd. For some reason whenever we play the major cities, like Leeds or Newcastle, they're always really packed. We played the 100 club in London, sold it out and there was still four hundred people waiting to get in. But then you come back to Hull, our home town, and the clubs are half-full. Does it put you off Hull a bit then? Are you just waiting until you can go to London?

Hull's fuckin' ace. There's something really happening here. In one of his last interviews John Peel said that Hull has the potential to become the next Manchester, and I think he just meant that there's a movement, a scene beginning to develop, and he was right. The other night I was sat with Baggott from Turismo, and he was drawing this map, like a family tree, and I was amazed by how all the bands from Hull were linked together in some way, and that's the best thing about it all, the sense of family, community.
