I go outside for a bit.
I notice that people from other Hull bands have starting showing up to lend their support;
Pedgie from The Raywells, Steff from The Landaus and Baz
from The Dirty Dreamers all turn up at various points. It's good to see.
The one thing that consistently impresses me about the music coming from Hull at the
minute is the sense of community.
|
|
|
Hull is notoriously bad for back-biting and the general feeling of rising bile that accompanies anyone else's success in something. But sensing this, the local bands have collated into one big firm that encourages and supports itself. There's a palpable sense of something happening, something special being created.
As the signing session winds down, Paul from Park 'n Ride does some press-ups.
|
|
Flyers for Welly and the Yo-Yo night are handed out along with discount vouchers for Chinese Laundry.
It solidifies the sense that people are going for it, whatever it may be, making connections
and making shit happen.
|
Eventually we all drift towards The Ringside. The sun doesn't let us down, and as I pull up I notice that people are spilling out into the beer garden. It's a perfect day for it.
It's a small intimate gig, and the members of various bands hang out with the fans, knocking back bottles of beer,
just chilling and soaking it all up.
It's like a who's who of the hottest music being produced in Hull at this point in history.
|
|
I stand in my usual place for these kinda things - the bar. There's a good feeling about the whole thing, and I sip my pint knowing this thing is gonna be a treat.
I manage to have a quick chat with Tom, the lead singer of The Paddingtons.
He's a quiet guy, and when I manage to corner him he gives me that rabbit-in-the-headlights look.
So, do you like things like signings and stuff, or is it something that you have to be coerced into?
|
|
We've done a few before. We did one in Glasgow yesterday...it can be a bit boring, but it's something that you do for the fans. It's all part of the game.
I bet the past year or so has seen your life mutate into A Hard Day's Night pastiche...
It is a bit bizarre. A million different things seem to be happening at once.
I mean, we were in Paris the other day doing that Christian Dior thing, and now we're back in Hull doing this.
You can't even really think about it.
|
Do you think that Hull's a good place to be right now?
Hull's kicking off. Everything's gaining momentum. There's loads of bands forming, and then there's places like
Chinese Laundry opening up and it's all connected, all orbiting the same scene; there just seems to be a lot happening.

Sal Paradise at The White Room - Saturday 19th March 05 By Anthony Baine
|
|
This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com.
Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music
scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now.
About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh

Saturday 12th March 05 - Soulflame at the White Room By Michelle Dee
|
|
Soulflame have strong Puddle of Mudd influences in both sound and song construction.
The E.P. is more melodic and measured than the live performance.
Nic's vocals are at times quite balladic. He reaches for the high notes with a fresh
enthusiasm

Why the hell do I do these things, it's not to get my skirt pulled up by some drunken goat
called Mark that's for sure.
If this had been in an office and not a nightclub then I would have you up for sexual
harassment make no mistake. Did I see you go around lifting up other girls' apparel?

Music Reviews - Friday 4th March 05 - The Ga*Ga*s at Asylum By Andy Dykes, Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers

Its rock-a-rama at Asylum: tonight. Three bands, one bill, all about the rock.
First up, Disarm:.
Their cover of New Order's Blue Monday is superb, harking back to Marilyn Manson
and Dope's covers of new romantic greats.
Disarm:'s own material is intricate

Monday 28th February - Black Orchid, Diverse Unit, Second To Last, The Regicides at the Ringside By Harry Slater

|
It's cold tonight, not as cold as it was this morning, but cold enough to complain about.
The garish decoration of The Ringside makes a welcome change from the browns and greys of a city thawing out.
The outside door, as per usual, scares the crap out of me as it slams shut

What's one to do when they are bored with Brighton's infamous Pier amusements,
and has then had their fill of the plethora of fashion and food-orientated
establishments that are packed into Brighton's cosmopolitan city centre?
Aside from any shows that might be playing in the few theatres in the

Sweet n Sour has a new home, a new night and a different feel. In order to take advantage of the Saturday night crowd the Sweet n Sour promoters have moved to Silhouette on Park Street.
As I walked up Princes Ave I heard shouting then saw in the distance a brawl breaking out.

Young Jesse Malin, trading New York for Olde York for one night only! I could hardly contain myself
at the prospect, for Jesse is one of the most exciting singer-songwriters to have emerged from
New York City in the past few years since the release of his beautiful debut album,

Many of you who go out on a regular basis will know the disappointment you get when you're
shakin' your thing on the dance floor and the music changes to your least favourite track.
Wouldn't it be nice for every song played to be one that you love, so you could party

Tuesday 25th January - Mike (The Bonnits) and The Last People on Earth at The Sesh By Daniel Laney Photos by Darren Rogers

Quite saddened by the fact that this was going to be my last trip to The Sesh in a while,
I hesitantly vacated the cars warm interior, knowing full well as soon as my battered
trainers hit the cold, coarse concrete, the evenings egg timer would be turned and
I would be left

In, what has been a busy week, I had a date with The Asylum pencilled in.
I arrived in good time, and queued with a few others, eventually we were all let in.
Tonight's admission was £4 very reasonable for four acts.
For those not in the know The Asylum is a large venue
