Night Clubs - Friday 2nd December - Regis at Pure Techno at Rhythm Room Contd
By Michelle Dee

Prev Page.
|
Once you have that first small group you can start to manipulate the rest.
In no time at all, believe it or not, the feelings of those first few can spread like
wild fire as each person within the crowd conforms to what quickly becomes the norm.
Full on, feet stomping, hands in the air, head whirling, euphoric dancing.
|
|
|
Of course, it helps if you have had a few mind enhancing substances before hand, you are
then more inclined to lose inhibitions.
Regis said he was loving the Hull crowd; they managed to blow away any of
the associated misconceptions he had been hitherto concerned with.
In fact he was very much taken with the place and was eagerly talking about a return visit.
He was, as many of the true professionals in the entertainment industry, both
approachable and affable to boot.
|
Rhythm Room is split in to two main parts, both with bars and seated areas; upstairs
you can have a few hundred or more people dancing their tits off as one club goer so eloquently stated.
There are two well sized screens displaying digital imagery with shapes, patterns and
colours that move and morph in time to the music.
As well as these visual displays there is an impressive lighting rig complete with
blinding spotlights, gels and strobe.
To add even more atmosphere, a smoke machine is used subtly to heighten the ecstasy just one more level.
|
|
|
When the one driving the wheels of steel drops a particular track the crowd, as one, raise
the roof and the beats become all consuming.
|
|
Nothing else matters apart from following that sound; waiting for it to grow, come
alive, build and transport you somewhere; far from where you started.
It's not just about playing the tunes but creating undulating soundscapes that rise
and fall with the crowd; a symbiotic interaction that feeds off the other.
Many have argued that this kind of music can help to free the mind from everyday
concerns and evoke something of a spiritual transition.
It does seem to tap into different synaptic pathways that many other genres just don't
reach, akin, I suppose, to the outbreaks of transcendental rapture in Evangelical churches.
|
Downstairs has more of a chilled out vibe with a smaller dance area but with no
less talented deejays and no less enthusiastic dancers, at times.
I was fortunate to experience some first rate mixing from the well respected and much
loved Andy Maile.
He managed to put together some dirty breaks mixed up with grinding beats, throw in
some old skool house and keep all downstairs movin' and agroovin'.
I was particularly impressed with the vast range of samples of tunes that you kind of felt
you knew that he would loop a tiny part of, then add other half-familiar sounds to create
a new, ever changing, ever evolving pulse.
|
|
|
Towards the end I was really on another plane and was rather shocked and grounded when
abruptly the sound ceased. This could be something of a throwback to my days of
listening to piano-driven house and euro-trance, the ending of a carefully
engineered set can be so blindingly beautiful.
Special mention must go to George who did the last mix; we had an illuminating
discussion after, about all things philosophical; which I look forward to continuing.
|
Pure Techno - a thoroughly enjoyable night, so get your spiritual
minds and bodies lifted next time the Pure Techno crew open another
can of whup ass breaks and beats.

Music Reviews - Saturday 23rd April - Hard-Fi, Boy Kill Boy and Turismo at Sweet n Sour, Silhouette Club By Dick Spring
with a terrfic 9 page Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
|
|
On arrival at the front of the club I find a queue waiting to get in, so this must be some
measure of the demand for this show tonight (oh, the power of hype) though a top ten
single can't have helped the headline band's cause at all!
It was indeed packed out, it took me twenty minutes to get a drink, which is something
that needs to be addressed by

Music Reviews - Thursday 21st April - Ernest, Rumpus, Scaramanga Six and Fonda 500 at the Adelphi Happy as a Sandman By Michelle Dee

What a fantastic night.
No really, if you weren't there then you missed out on seeing some of the finest
bands the other side of sanity.
The monthly local music magazine, oft slated in its own backyard landed a
winning formula tonight.
Ernest, who everyone should experience, continue to be spine
tingling and achingly beautiful.
Last night they grabbed

Midge Ure at Pocklington Arts Centre - Wednesday 13th April 05 By Steve Rudd
|
|
Let me first just say that the Pocklington Arts Centre is a truly fantastic venue, and it's
quite amazing that such a quality venue graces a town that is so small.
Nestling perfectly to one side of the town's charming Market Square, this venue
is a theatre, concert hall and

Sal Paradise at The White Room - Saturday 19th March 05 By Anthony Baine

This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com.
Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music
scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now.
About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh
