After the gig, the guys look like a bunch of nutters who've just raced around Hull to play two gigs, so it's obvious that there's no chance that I'll get a coherent interview.

Luckily, crafty bugger that I am, I anticipated this, and interviewed the band earlier in the week, so in true Blue Peter fashion, here's one I prepared earlier...
Tell me about your new EP, Local Hero - where did you record it, how long did it take, stuff like that...

Dawson: We recorded at the Last Studio On Earth with Paddy from Last People on Earth. It only took five days.

Moggy: We've produced some good stuff. In the past we've always used analogue equipment, so it was good to be in a decent studio.
Is recording an easy process for you? Are you comfortable in a studio environment?

Dawson: It's like a different world. Of course you want to recreate the live feel, and the record is raw as fuck, but a lot of what you sound like comes from the mastering.

Neil: You can experiment with your sound a bit more, but you don't want to turn into Yes all of sudden and demand hundreds of guitar overdubs. It's not perfect, it's a local recording, but we still have to compete with other bands on a professional level.
Dawson: You listen to something like the Kings of Leon's Aha Shake Heartbreak, and it's basically a live recording, but it's obvious they've spent thousands mastering it and tweaking it. Obviously we can't afford to do that, but we're really happy with the way the EP turned out.
How do you go about writing your songs?

Neil: Well, we just go around to each other's houses when we get ideas. Sometimes you can't sit down when you're in a band. When you're putting so many hours into something, it's easy to go a bit crackers.

Now that you're getting wider recognition, are you getting the kind of "We can mould you into stars" offers?

Neil: No. I think it's easy to see when something's contrived, and we're avoiding all that. We have decent management team - Paul's (Spooner, the band's mangager) toiling away, and I also have to give Tony Grimes a mention.
So you're confident and in control at the minute...

Dawson: We've got a good team supporting us. We're playing three, four times a week... All kinds of things are happening for us: three guitar shops in LA play our songs, we've got mobile phone companies wanting to use our tracks on ads, we're sending demos to major labels like Parlophone. And the more that happens, the more it spurs you on. We've got ambition, fire in the belly and we want to succeed.

Music Reviews - Unite Against Fascism - Fraction of the Cost - The Ringside Sunday 19th September - By Andy Dykes
Tonight I expect The Ringside to be dimly lit and packed to the rafters with members of the Zapatistas, Rage Against the Machine and the Cuban government, all talking earnestly and with hushed voices. Possibly the A-Team too. I expect an air of urgency, a feeling that we're all taking part in some Read more...

Music Reviews - The Favours, Dirty Dreamers, Sweet Assassin at The Welly Club on 16th Sept 04 By Andy Dykes
Tonight's openers Sweet Assassin get proceedings underway with an apology. Their bassist hasn't turned up and so they welcome onto the stage Paul, a real, bona fide session musician. The band open with a punchy little number called 'Touch Me I'm Sick'. It's a solid effort, although the action onstage Read more...

Music Reviews - Clever Brains Fryin', Young Heart Attack, The Bonnits, at The Welly Club 26th Aug 04 By Richard Stead
I kept telling myself; nah, no way is Keith Flint at Welly Club. I knew he loved the small venues he plays with The Prodigy but I never thought he would ever play in such a small place like The Welly. Well that was all put to one side when first bounced on MC Sir Real and MC Bad Manner shouting; Read more...

Music Reviews - Morrissey and The Dead 60's on Monday 6th September at Bridlington Spa By Steve Rudd.
Photos By Darren Rogers
What can I say, other than what an amazing night! Support band The Dead 60's, who took on the mighty stage at 8pm sharp for their half-hour set, were so brilliant that I'd almost forgotten that Morrissey was still to come after them. The Dead 60's are a young quintet impeccably Read more...

Music Reviews - Blind Frog Ernie, Le Shed, Shindigg, Killer of Saints, Displacements at the Piper Club Tuesday 7th September 2004 By Andy Dykes
I walk through the door of The Piper tonight, straight into a wall of sound created by three guys who look and sound like a very early Blink 182. This band is Displacements. It's hard to figure out exactly what's going on until they introduce a little subtlety. And then it all starts to sound pretty good. Vocally, neither singer Read more...

Music Reviews - Band News Steve Larkman CD Release - The Start of the End of The World
Steve Larkman has released a new album The Start of the End of the World. Following his debut Album Tearjerker and it's single release, Thin White Dove which proved an enormous success in the Irish charts, Steve is hoping for more success with Read more...

Music Reviews - Sweet n Sour at the Welly Club 19th August - 5678's, 59 Violets and The Morphines By Andy Dykes
I've heard tonight's openers The Morphines described as something like Ian Curtis singing with The Clash. If my musical arithmetic is correct, then The Morphines should sound something like Sham 69. And they do. A bit. While the garage rock revival grips the world like nuclear war, The Morphines hark back to an era Read more...

Music Reviews - The Babyshambles - Saturday 14th August at YoYo Indie Night At The Welly Club, Hull By Andy Coe
All week the only talking point in the city was - Is Pete gonna turn up? And turn up he did! Last night (Saturday 14th August) at The Yo-Yo indie night in Hull at The Welly Club a sell out crowd witnessed The greatest Rock n Roll show the city has ever seen. Fans were camped Read more...

Music Reviews - The Noise Hits Hull - 106FM
By Sarah Carter
Whilst stuck at traffic lights in Witham ( Hull ) I heard a wonderful sound. No, not Dale Winton announcing my lottery numbers but something almost as good. Rock music in Hull !!!. I pinched myself and it hurt. I then saw a poster on the old pub on Read more...

Music Reviews - Yo-Yo presents Pete Docherty and The Paddingtons At The Welly - Sat 14th Aug By Steve Rudd
The Welly Club (about a mile away from the train station and down Beverley Road, for those who might not know) is fast becoming the hottest venue in the city in which to check out quality bands, both old and new. Tonight's almost instantaneously SOLD-OUT gig was Read more...

Music Reviews - HarriWatts Band Comin' Out Party At The Lamp Wednesday 4th August By Jane Foster
This is the first time I've really seen the Harri Watts band properly. I did in theory see them at the Lamp once before, at the Cracktown Christmas Carol last year. But that was after several flagons of fine ale and much good cheer, with a bit of rubber chicken abuse thrown in. A perfect night in my book, Read more...

Music Reviews - Sons of the Desert at the Nagshead Friday 30th July By Jane Foster
Sons of the Desert are a 9-piece soul covers band who have been dishing out their fine meaty goods to the people of 'ull for roundabout a decade..give or take a few changes in their line-up over the years. Last time I saw them was last Christmas at the selfsame pub, and I thought they were rather grand then, so I Read more...

Music Reviews - Jaz Bar 10th August 2004 The Ludes, The Mardous, 59 Violets, The Applewhites By Andy Dykes
The classy setting of the Old Town's Jaz Bar plays unlikely host to a range of bands tonight. The wooden floors and high concrete ceilings make Jaz Bar an unusual choice for this evening's entertainment. Combined with an absence of carpets, cushions on chairs and curtains on windows and I get the feeling that there are going to be a Read more...
