So Sidewinder hit the stage, and even though they're a bit sweaty
and bleary-eyed, they don't fuck about, launching straight into Money Love,
the second track on their new EP, Local Hero.
They're a tight unit, tighter than the grip of alkie on his tinny.
Their music has a modern stampy feel that segues into an almost terrace chant chorus.
It's distinctive and poppy, and it says, Wake up yer fuckers, Sidewinder's on the stage.
Cast your mind away, they sing... a phrase that could almost describe my
(lack of) writing technique.

The Load is a bit harder with London Calling guitars that attempt to nail
down Moggy's relentless beat. I imagine kids listening to this on iPods,
stomping along in time with the beat on their way to a shithole school they don't wanna go to.
Told You Once has some soaring Beach Boy vocal harmonies on it and a
Kinks style guitar line, and it demonstrates the melodic nature of the band's music,
I wanna listen to this shit on a beach in a really hot country, wearing jeans,
a really heavy sweater and a raincoat. Don't ask me why.

This could be misconstrued as being insulting if I don't phrase it right,
but Fuck it, I'll say it anyway: It's good to see a band that hasn't got
caught up in trying follow fashion and have stuck to noble art of writing
a good tune, and they confirm this observation with Forty Years, which
has a guitar that could have come from the Hull's own Mick Ronson.
It's quickly followed by Wasteland In My Town, which also happens to be
my favourite Sidewinder track right now. It's like fishhook through my
ear; just can't get the fucker out, it's stuck right in there, shredding
my lobe every time I yank it.

Lucky Stars and Taxman and the Union' are easily as good as - maybe better than -
anything being produced by Franz Ferdinand at this point in time.
By the way, I know that pointless, contemporary comparisons are terrible things
that make no sense. I bet you wouldn't get Rudyard Kipling comparing Sidewinder
to Franz Ferdinand.
By the end of the song, two of Dawson's strings have snapped.
The last one to go embeds itself in the back of his hand.
He winces, but he carries on and the band erupts in Local Hero the anthemic
title track from their EP.

Moggy hits the drums with such ferocity that for a minute I'm convinced that
a crazy, drunken, sinister midget has invaded the stage, causing the
bespectacled drummer to retaliate by any means necessary, using the only
things within his grasp - his sticks.
Blood trickles down the back of Dawson's hand as he somehow finds the
chords on four (count 'em) strings.
I briefly consider kicking the guy next to me in the nuts so I can
gratuitously use the blood/sweat/tears cliché, but it hardly seems
appropriate to spoil the atmosphere.
