Next up - The Dirty Dreamers. Now, I've written about this band before, so I wasn't sure what to say about them this time. They're another lot that seem to be suffering from the onset of creeping cynicism. They're a bit too seventies, people say stroking their chins like a group of indie-rock Simon Cowells. Fuck that, I say.

They kick off with Disease and Overload, and Ash demonstrates his ability to turn a crowd into a bunch of foaming-at-the-mouth mad fuckers. He screams over the top of a riff that could have come straight out of Deep Purple or Free's back catalogue.
Three Lines loopy guitar line and opening scream clatters everyone around the head, leaving no room for recovery.

Style Ambition boasts the sort of killer riff that kids will replaying over and over in order to learn. Baz gives his guitar some pelvic thrustin' love during C'mon Get Real and two girls stood near me at the bar practically wet their knickers. I tell you, these guys need to be given a shit load of money by a record company so they can buy a castle by a lake in Scotland and record a satanic masterpiece amidst an orgy of sex and drugs.
They sign off Inside My Head, a strange hybrid that marries a Black Sabbath style riff with a Cobain-esque screaming vocal. A couple of years ago The Darkness turned a pastiche of eighties guitar rock into multi-platinum sales, and let's face it, they were fuckin' pants. The Dirty Dreamers mine an altogether richer source, the kinda mid-seventies rock best exemplified by Stillwater, the fictional band from Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous.

They have the right tunes and they don't pretend to be anything other than a rollicking good-time band. And they look the part as well, they look like the sorta guys who make the kind of music they're making, and from seeing them around I know they walk it like they talk it.
We live in an age where unmitigated wank like Rooster can get into the charts, so why not give The Dirty Dreamers a shot Mr. Record Executive-type. Are yer fuckin' listening?

There's a bit of a pause while Sidewinder get their shit together. They're playing two gigs on the bounce, the first taking place at Ringside earlier in the evening, so when they arrive they look a bit frayed around the edges, something that's understandable.
I look at the bar and everyone seems a little bit lost, like they're all looking for something, probably beer.

Saying that, it's probably just me projecting my own deep-depression onto the faces of others, all the while pondering alchemy - the ancient art of turning bullshit into alcohol...

The sky is black and clear tonight. This means that for the first time in a while, the stars are being given the chance to shine on Hull. This also means that it's pretty bitter outside. Inside Asylum tonight, it doesn't seem to be any warmer. Maybe that's why so many people are huddled together so closely? Or maybe Read more...
