It's the turn of the 59 Violets next. I've seen them before, but I missed most of their set, just catching Satellite at the end of their set. I had them pegged as a straight up, new-wave kinda band, but Yeah Yeah Yeah and Dirty Water, their opening tracks, completely confounded my expectations. They weigh in with meaty saw-mill riffs and growling basslines which owe more to Soundgarden and Mudhoney than something like The Jam, say.

Before they start on the next track, Digsy tells the crowd that the usual guitarist is ill and has been temporarily replaced. Well, they don't drop a beat, and I have to admit, had it not been mentioned I wouldn't have noticed. I'm a sucker for detail, me. Riverbed is a great clunking track that keeps kick starting like a stolen motorbike, backed up by a throbbing hypnotic bassline. In true John Peel style, were going to start this song off at the wrong speed and then change...don't worry, we're professional, Digsy says, before launching into Fields, which signals another style switch.

It has an Eastern kinda groove, jangly guitars and pulsating rhythms. I have to stop and ask myself: Why aren't this band three albums in and touring America, kicking arse across the continent as they go? Well, can anyone tell me? The next track, Thugg' even has the audacity to throw in some slap bass. Now usually a band using slap bass is enough to send me scurrying into the corner in a fit of embarrassment, but they resist the temptation to descend into RHCP style octave slapping and popping, and just use it as another sound to bolster the song, rather than making it the focus of the song.

Satellite is next, and it moves into the new-wave style that I was expecting from the offset, and then they unleash a scream-tastic cover of Eleanour Rigby that replaces the sparseness of the original with something altogether more sinister. 59 Violets are great at covering a wide range of styles within a small set, while never sounding disjointed. They give nods to whole host of bands, but at no point do they sound like anyone other than themselves. Good fuckin' stuff.
