Saturday 5th February 05 - Sidewinder, Mr. Mojo and Tekoba at The Late Room, Manchester
By Richard Kemp (Racing Pulse Records / Tardis Music)
next page

Saturday saw Hull's latest assault on the Manchester music scene in the form of Sidewinder, Mr Mojo, and Tekoba as well as two coach loads of some of the city's most dedicated music fans and followers.
The event which was organised and run by Red Oktober Music (with a special mention to Simon) started outside of Debenhams on Ferensway when the hundred or so fans clambered aboard their awaiting chariots to take the two hour journey down the M62 to see their local heroes in action.

You could tell this was going to be a special day for Hull music from the word go, as the atmosphere on the busses was electric.
Stories were shared on past gigs and adventures that we had been on whilst following bands from our fair city and today was Manchester's turn to bask in the glory of some of Hull's best guitar frenzied mayhem.
On arrival in Manchester first impressions were good and the venue looked sharp, as did the sign in the window of Brannigans next door £1 a pint - all day it didn't take this Hull army long to depart from our home of the last two hours.

After a few hours of soaking up the magical Manchester ambience and working our way through the infinite selection of fine ales on offer, it was time to enter The Late Room and cheer on our unsigned heroes.
Upon entering the venue I became a little concerned about how this event was going to sound. The roof was so low, even I was worried about banging my head, and there were pillars scattered all around the place does anyone remember Hull's Steam Tavern?
First on stage were Tekoba a young quartet with a female vocalist whose peachy voice traversed around the dungeon like venue as if on its own mystery tour. I also made a mental note to mention Tekoba's guitarist who certainly knows how to experiment with his six-string magic wand. I would like to apologise for not catching any of this new bands names (yet) as this was only their second gig. Yeah, I didn't believe it too. Watch out for these guys!

Next up are the charismatic and definitive Mr Mojo.
Mr Mojo are a band who look good, feel good, sound good and have done good. Well, they have done better than good you only need to check out their CV of the last two years to see that.
BBC Raw Talent winners, appearances at Glastonbury, Leeds and Reading festivals, Radio airplay, releasing a song for Hull City A.F.C, Maida Vale sessions and a TV appearance are just a few of their long list of musical achievements. In fact the only thing this band hasn't done is get signed, but even that can't be too far away now. After several line up changes Mr Mojo are now, as far as I am concerned at their very best and without doubt at their strongest.

This has largely been down to the additions of Robbie on guitar and Kristian on lead vocals.
These additions have meant that Joe and Stewart have been able to spend more time honing their song writing skills and put more effort into their respective instruments.

The new songs sound fantastic and the older ones such as Walk On and Times Are Changing have never sounded so good.

This particular performance made you proud to be from Hull and the crowd loved them.
