Music Live Band Festival Reviews |
|
 |
|
|
I felt it was particularly telling when Graham Rhodes; host, compere of Beached 2005 and creator
of upforit.tv and numerous other music initiatives such as DIY Collective and Soundwave on
Radio York spoke out against Yorkshire Arts Council for not supporting the festival.
Once again this is an example of, local music snubbed by those with the ability and funds to finance it.
Thus helping to perpetuate the deeply damaging idea that local music is not deserving of
funding and is therefore not recognised and accepted as art.
|
|
This attitude is typical all over the country and in a time when Tony Blair is apparently
backing independent record labels, Arts Councils are refusing to promote, finance or even
recognise the huge musical talents within their own counties.
|
After this brief hiatus and the last of what must have been over fifty or more kit
changes for the stage crew, it was on to the headliners and the final act of the music marathon,
the Bluetones.
The London band was rocketed to stardom when their single Slight Return shot to number one in 1995.
They followed that up with more blisteringly good pop songs such as Bluetonic then
Cut Some Rug and Marblehead Johnson the following year.
Mark Morriss lead singer walks on stage so laidback he is almost horizontal, remarking
on how lovely the moon looks.
|
|
|
This causes the crowd to take their eyes of the stage for a brief second to gaze at the
jewelled bay, bathed in the beauty of the full yellow moon.
The songs were all delivered in the self assured manner that he has been entertaining
us with for the past ten years.
Then strutting like a man possessed. Sliding across the stage on the balls of his shoes.
Filled with the swagger of rock n roll nonchalance, eyes raised to the sky, leaning at a
rakish angle on the mic stand, he pauses.
He looks straight out at the Blue army: a moniker given to Bluetones fans probably by some
journo years before, and launches into the acoustic slower song Flower on the fountainhead.
|
|
He appears younger tonight than he did last year at the Adelphi in Hull.
Good musicians seem to age just as well as good music do.
Amid the set, he briefly leaves the stage only to return carrying a glass and a bottle of Cognac he sets his
booty down on the drum visor then spins around in the middle of the stage.
|
|
This appears to be a cue for a tight bass and drum combo and everything is bathed in spectacular pink light.
Keep the home fires Burning follows ending with Mark doing a smart bow to his hundreds if not
thousands of adoring fans.
The Basement song he introduces as a song for anyone who has ever lived on their own a situation he
finds most agreeable adding that no-one should be made to share a bathroom with another.

As the strains of Coldplay faded at the hands of the in house deejay the crowd waits in

Music Reviews - The Zutons and Little Flames at Asylum - Monday 18th October By Andy Dykes, Photos by Darren Rogers
|
|
The sky is black and clear tonight. This means that for the first time in a while, the stars are being given
the chance to shine on Hull. This also means that it's pretty bitter outside.
Inside Asylum tonight, it doesn't seem to be any warmer.
Maybe that's why so many people are huddled together so closely? Or maybe

Music Reviews - The 22-20s, Cathy Davey and Willy Mason - Thursday 14th October - Sweet n Sour at The Welly By Andy Dykes, Photos by Darren Rogers

|
Outside The Welly Club tonight, people huddle together or dance absent-mindedly on the spot.
It's dark and it's cold.
But there's good reason to be braving the elements tonight.
The buzz surrounding The 22-20s is increasing so steadily, it's becoming more like a roar.
And the interest isn't lost on the good people of Hull who flock

Music Reviews - The Sunnyside Of The Day By Nicholas Boldock

First things first: I've had a really shit day. Having been in negotiations with a certain Hull-based

me that, after three meetings with various luminaries from the firm, my services would not be required

Music Reviews - Park and Ride, Blue Sand and David Devant and his Spirit Wife, SweetNSour 7th Oct By Michelle Dee
|
|
Arriving at 9pm the Welly looked bleak and unpromising.
A few people stood between the cold metal railings used to slow down the club-goers
in their desire to get inside.
Mo, my photographer for the night, and I dutifully joined what was the makings of a queue.
With a rail on either side we were not unlike lambs or pigs
