17th March 05 - Ernest Conquer Camden Underworld(3/4)
By Michelle Dee

|
|
With a huge station clock suspended from the vaulted ceiling, this really is an amazing place.
It's popular too, with people from all over the world coming together, celebrating
St. Patrick's Day.
I spoke with so many different nationalities that night some French, some Spanish,
Swiss, Portuguese, Dutch, Swedish, German and Australian.
I delighted when they told me about their countries of origin.
|
|
They asked me where I was from and you should have seen there faces when I
explained I was from England, they just lit up.
Apparently actually meeting someone from England in a Camden pub is quite an achievement.
They were like, oh England is sooo cool.
|
|
There's a confusing sign, as I walk around taking snaps, it reads Conquering England.
There are some strange flyers and posters dotted around the venue too.
Why every black person needs to know about organ donation, woah scary.
London lost and found, yeah you kind of feel lost when you come here.
You don't seem to stay long enough to find yourself...We could have done with
this public information service a few hours ago when we were trudging
through take away filled high streets.
|
|
|
I have paid for a drink. I can see my drink, but I can't reach it. Always out of reach.
A few words from Terry after the gig:
Excellent, next time we would like to come in a private jet so we don't have to drive all the
way down a good nine hours there and back.
Some muso chat from the back of the bus:
I like Ernest because they are a bit different they are not the usual run
of the mill rubbish.
|
This is possibly not to their advantage, if they want mainstream recognition how would you
package and market a band that is unlike anything else.
It might be ten minutes long but it changes three or four times before it reaches an abrupt end.
They slow down, they speed up but some people don't want that.
Ernest have a little more depth to them than the usual rubbish.
If it doesn't challenge you what's the point?
|
Most record companies aren't willing to take a risk with different.
They don't want different.
It's a while since something has come along and changed the face of music like Pink Floyd did,
then Sonic Youth and Nirvana.
I sat at the back of the minibus with Black and reminisced about Wedding Present
and My Bloody Valentine.
Guess we all get stuck in our own little ruts from time to time, it's inevitable.
We remarked about the distinct lack of new, really new music promoters, John Peel
has left a huge gap in people's lives and at the moment no-one seems willing
to stick their neck out and take risks like he did.
|
|
|
Except maybe Alan Raw.
He plays Ernest alongside Hip Hop from France, rock n roll from
Hull, metal from Leeds, funk from Sheffield, pop and punk from everywhere in between.
Magic and true innovation only comes when some one challenges the adage; you
can't do that, it will never work.
|
|
No joy at all on the old AnR men which was a shame, but I managed to get my copy
of the, soon to be globe trotting, Sesh CD to Al Douglas from Wild Plum Promotions
the regular sound guy.
I have to admit to being a little disappointed that he didn't play it on the night.
I also felt he could have been more enthusiastic about the bands playing, he could
have said a lot of different things but he didn't.
|
|
However he was courteous enough to come and talk with me upstairs later in the evening.
With a little bit o' luck, tracks from Linnet and Lark regulars might get heard
by one or two important ears. Know any one-eared talent scouts?

Music Reviews - 10,000 Things at Jaz Bar - 26th October 04 By Caroline Murphy
|
|
So what do the music magazines know about the sensitive side of a group of sexed up 20-some-Things!
Their stage show gives anything but that impression, but close-up and personal in the smaller
venues of Hull Jaz Bar and Shrewsbury Buttermarket, I can tell a different story.

|
Once again tonight, Princes Ave's Linnet and Lark plays host to a evening of live bands.
With a stage littered with instruments and a bar crowded with rock n roll types, it looks
suitably like the home of what is fast becoming one of the most widely respected and
indeed played evenings in Hull.
Tonight's headliners

We used to pose for the Grattan's catalogue, and sometimes Kay's if money was really tight,

Music Reviews - Blind Frog Ernie, Blue Sand the Applewhites and Displacements at Piper November23rd By Michelle Dee Photos by Darren Rogers

The Piper club on Newland Avenue has, according to many people, always had something of a volatile reputation.
On more than one occasion I have heard reports from people that you always get fights and
fracas at the venue.
Indeed the last time I went to the Piper there was a very

Pocklington Arts Centre is a beautifully intimate all seated venue.
It's the perfect venue for tonight's gig. With high sound quality and acoustics, it's no
wonder so many acts speak well of this little known venue. Tonight saw one of America's finest
singer-songwriters, Josh Rouse, take to its stage

Brandishing brilliant brushstrokes of Alison Krauss-creased Bluegrass music as it is
meant to sound, this quintet in the Mojo-magazine-championed Coal Porters played to
an almost sold-out venue in the small town of Pocklington on that one night of the
week when most people prefer

Former Icicle Works frontman, Liverpudlian genius Ian McNabb has long been setting
mid-sized venues

and has released plenty of truly incredible
