17th March 05 - Ernest Conquer Camden Underworld(1/4)

On a Thursday afternoon I stood outside Debenhams in town waiting for the minibus to arrive from Hedon.
Today I was travelling to London to see Ernest headline in Camden.
The ten-seater minibus arrived at around half three and I was ushered inside by
some rather excited and slightly inebriated Ernest fans.
We set of on our long journey leaving the shadows of Hull's familiar landmarks in our wake.
Ernest are not just another local band singing and playing songs, the
four piece are exploring higher realms, as they navigate the route to Ernest territory.
Not only do they trek through musical time, shifting genre and tempo, they travel
through the stories and meanings of their lives.
|
|
|
Terry, the lead singer, looks like he is re-living the highs and the lows right there on stage.
He clutches at the air as if it is a tangible thing and contorts his face with the effort of
expressing, what gets Ernest's heart pumping.
Songs like Glidded, lyrically just south of surreal, are drawn from real life.
Personal moments of triumph and tragedy for the Hedon group are woven into seamless
tapestries of searchlight sound. |
|
Sweet Inspirations is about a sweet shop next to the
Queens Pub where the Ernest clan used to hang out in days gone by.
This was a favoured spot, because there was a hot air vent set in the wall, so the
gang could stay warm from the chill of a winter's eve.
The pub is still there, and the friends have graduated to sampling the tempting treats
there in: sadly the sweetshop isn't, in its place a Nail bar now stands.
There's progress for you.

Tall lorries vie for room on the asphalt, we are one hour from London: flashing
headlights, darkening sky with Pet Sounds from Brian Wilson et al competing
with the sound of rubber grinding tarmac. We ate up the miles with Cain at the wheel.
We are in a race with a white van and here we go ...we are winning, we are still
in a race and we are winning... OHHHHH
Oh no it's all over and at the last second away he goes. Oh he's gone.
|
|
Not ten miles from the venue we find ourselves lost, the map we have is as much
use as the place names on a regular Monopoly board.
|
|
We are crawling through Golders Green, didn't someone write a poem about being lost in Golders Green?
We had to stop and ask for directions on a number of occasions.
Go left, then right, then straight on, then up the hill by the hospital, right at
the top and you're there.
|
|
|
And do you know what, we were.
Parking across the road we arrived at the Camden Underworld shortly after half eight.

Sal Paradise at The White Room - Saturday 19th March 05 By Anthony Baine

This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com.
Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music
scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now.
About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh

Saturday 12th March 05 - Soulflame at the White Room By Michelle Dee
|
|
Soulflame have strong Puddle of Mudd influences in both sound and song construction.
The E.P. is more melodic and measured than the live performance.
Nic's vocals are at times quite balladic. He reaches for the high notes with a fresh
enthusiasm

Why the hell do I do these things, it's not to get my skirt pulled up by some drunken goat
called Mark that's for sure.
If this had been in an office and not a nightclub then I would have you up for sexual
harassment make no mistake. Did I see you go around lifting up other girls' apparel?

Music Reviews - Friday 4th March 05 - The Ga*Ga*s at Asylum By Andy Dykes, Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers

Its rock-a-rama at Asylum: tonight. Three bands, one bill, all about the rock.
First up, Disarm:.
Their cover of New Order's Blue Monday is superb, harking back to Marilyn Manson
and Dope's covers of new romantic greats.
Disarm:'s own material is intricate

Monday 28th February - Black Orchid, Diverse Unit, Second To Last, The Regicides at the Ringside By Harry Slater

It's cold tonight, not as cold as it was this morning, but cold enough to complain about.
The garish decoration of The Ringside makes a welcome change from the browns and greys of a city thawing out.
The outside door, as per usual, scares the crap out of me as it slams shut

What's one to do when they are bored with Brighton's infamous Pier amusements,
and has then had their fill of the plethora of fashion and food-orientated

Aside from any shows that might be playing in the few theatres in the
