Bad Girls Collective
By Carolyn
As the house and dance music scene in England goes from strength to strength the city of Hull is supplying it with new and innovative DJs by the dozen. There are many good DJ's in this area and for its size and limited selling area, Hull is certainly keeping up with the rest of the country in its varied nights across the city and many new genres are being supported.
There does seem to be a lack of quality female DJs and producers though.
The likes of Lisa Lashes and Charlotte Birch are all well and good but where are they?
They tour on their own and promote themselves but never seem to come together and offer their sets out as a collective or crew so going to see these ladies play often means that they play one set and then you have your residents and maybe another headliner. Not good if you want to se them playing back to back raking out the tunes and not good if the only set they ever play is one well rehearsed and well known everywhere.
Hull is at the forefront of changing that.
I got to hook up with a collective of extraordinary lady DJs known as the Bad Girls. You're thinking of ex cons right? But the only crime they're daring to commit is changing the way that the DJ and music world view them as artistes and what they have to offer is something brand new.
DJs Carolyne Nasty, Messica, Hoover Jo and Adrenalin are unique, offering their services predominantly local and of course worldwide. They themselves play a varied lot of music. Each coming from different genres they have teamed up to play events back to back with each other and other residents with everything from the rather tame funky house to tuff and dirty, then across the board to the more extreme hard house, hard style, trance, hardcore and commercial dance.
They play as a collective with either just 2 of them or all 4, any night can be catered for. They have arranged their own promotions, future nights and more gigs, pretty impressive considering they have only been working together for a couple of months.
We decided that instead of rivaling each other on the local music scene and receiving
little recognition individually that if we teamed up we could take this scene by storm
and become well recognized.
We all love doing the same thing, getting the crowd going
and playing the music we love so why not come together and do it as a whole, says Carolyne.
Quite a cabaret methinks.
All 4 girls, from Hull, are well skilled in that they have a combined DJ'ing age of 12 years,
not bad going as none of them are near to being over the hill!.
They are all well known in Hull and the surrounding area for nights such as
Lets Av it, Superstars and the new Pure house where they are all now residents every
Thursday at the Rhythm Room. Carolyne has even played London and Leeds.
These girls definitely know what they want from this. With forthcoming gigs in Greece and the not so sunny Milton Keynes already booked they are being picked out for their versatility and cutting edge musical talents. Each of them has a vibrancy which has long been missed in the scene and a raunchy edge which every time gets their crowds going crazy on the dance floor.
Their personal careers have been successful and when I can pin them down altogether I want to talk to them as individuals within Bad Girls.
They deserve the high recognition that they are about to receive from their official
launch night this coming Friday at the popular Euphoria night held again, at Rhythm room.
If you can get your thang down to Rhythm Room on Friday you won't be disappointed.
With Euphoria's reputation already being sturdy and well known, the Bad Girls are going to run way ahead when it comes to great live performances and this seems like a perfect opportunity to catch them before you have to queue for ages in the future when all they can do is fit Hull in for a one off within their, soon to be, tight schedules.

CD/Album Reviews - Blind Frog Ernie - Inner Sanctum By Bernie Laverick
Like skiffle, boogie and ragtime, the concept album seems almost like an ancient relic from a long gone era.
But who could forget Rick Wakeman's epic The Myths and Legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the
Round Table or even, The Six Wives of Henry Vlll? Riveting stuff!
Even then, it was seen as self-indulgent pap, and quite

Album Reviews - Stoner - Life And Times (EP/Rhythmbank) By Steve Rudd
Superficially judging by the cover photo of this stunning three-track EP release,
one might blindly assume because this trio is comprised of three stylish young
lads that the music will be of the all-out rock variety.
They sure look ready to rock, and in spurts they do rock, but for the most part
the music of Stoner is a refreshing diversion for rock fans in that there
are strong elements of Soul

Jim Lines and Gary Rex of Portsmouth based band Ricky visited Hull as part of the relentless process of recording local school children performing a football chant. This is for their forthcoming single, a football inspired indie-anthem for the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany.
