The band was blasé about the adulation being heaped on Carl and there were one or two frank exchanges between them before dawn.

The song is a tongue and cheek apology for their drunken antics that night. More of that rich Northern humour is clearly evident when you examine the title closely. With Craig taking the lead, Danny and Alfie alternate on vocals accompanying his deep blues finger picking sound.

The Vels are very much at home on the stage and the appealing group have certainly found inspiration, as one of their song titles suggest. Now we wait to see exactly what they decide to do with such a precious commodity.
Third on tonight were robust band the Applewhites; they choose Old Routine as their lively opener, which immediately highlights the complimentary tones of Tom and Ash's vocals. The track Two Stops features phet-fuelled riffs from Tom on lead guitar and some split second timing from James on drums.

Looking out on a wasteland of guitar blares, blasts and bass-lines a desperate paranoid sound scape is fashioned. The dirty post-punk revival continues during You think you're Cool and on the infectious ska rhythms of I Hate You.
At times the vocal style harks back to the late seventies with long drawn out words reminiscent of Ian Curtis. Long haired Ash looks like he has stepped straight out of the movie Deliverance clad as he is in leather jacket, drainpipes and the coolest pink lace ups u ever did see.

The drumming on the former is deft; almost feathery, with James crossing his sticks delivering sharp effective bursts of syncopation.

Telling Lies is an absolute tour de force; screaming guitar licks assault the shattering vocals. A verbal onslaught on all the fraudsters ensues, possibly a word of warning to all the yes men of the industry.
The Applewhites never falter or stumble even when the tempo shifts in complex fashion at the experienced hands of James and Sean on bass.

These guys have toured the length and breadth of England and with Sean now sporting a porn star moustache they are sure to go on to greater things.
Tonight's headliners were Hull's favourite adopted sons, Fifty-Nine Violets from Barton. They have been fully paid up affiliates and highly respected members of the scene for some time now. Not only do they play a mean tune but they are involved with providing sound expertise/equipment and booking bands for other venues.

With one guitar down by the end of the second song, Digsy the usually laid back front man, did his up most to lay his replacement axe to rest during Fields. As it was, at the end of the song yet another string lay quivering in terror, at the edge of the stage. Moments earlier it had been cruelly ripped out of the instrument, but even this casualty didn't deter the lead singers frenzied playing.

Music Reviews - Sal Paradise at The White Room - Saturday 19th March 05 By Anthony Baine
This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com. Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now. About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 12th March 05 - Soulflame at the White Room By Michelle Dee
Soulflame have strong Puddle of Mudd influences in both sound and song construction. The E.P. is more melodic and measured than the live performance. Nic's vocals are at times quite balladic. He reaches for the high notes with a fresh enthusiasm Read more...

Music Reviews - Friday 4th March 05 - The Ga*Ga*s at Asylum By Andy Dykes, Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
Its rock-a-rama at Asylum: tonight. Three bands, one bill, all about the rock. First up, Disarm:. Their cover of New Order's Blue Monday is superb, harking back to Marilyn Manson and Dope's covers of new romantic greats. Disarm:'s own material is intricate Read more...

Music Reviews - Monday 28th February - Black Orchid, Diverse Unit, Second To Last, The Regicides at the Ringside
By Harry Slater
It's cold tonight, not as cold as it was this morning, but cold enough to complain about. The garish decoration of The Ringside makes a welcome change from the browns and greys of a city thawing out. The outside door, as per usual, scares the crap out of me as it slams shut Read more...

Music Reviews - Tuesday 25th January - Mike (The Bonnits) and The Last People on Earth at The Sesh By Daniel Laney Photos by Darren Rogers
Quite saddened by the fact that this was going to be my last trip to The Sesh in a while, I hesitantly vacated the cars warm interior, knowing full well as soon as my battered trainers hit the cold, coarse concrete, the evenings egg timer would be turned and I would be left Read more...
