Wednesday 27th July 05 - Emma Rugg Oceans/Depart EP Launch at the Lamp contd
By Michelle Dee

The credits on her new EP clearly display business acumen that belies her tender age.
Choosing to work with eminent names both home and abroad.
John Beland produced some of the material on the new disc and has worked with
Johnny Cash and Linda Ronstadt among other luminaries in the USA.
Touching on the business side, many female artists today use obvious methods to
sell themselves to the public by means of all kinds of cheap gimmicks.
All sleaze and no substance seems to be their approach where as Ms. Rugg lets her
talent do the talking.
|
|
Preferring an honest and pure approach with a commendable
disciplined work ethic rather than selling out to the highest bidder.
Pale and interesting; the flaxen haired singer charms her way into your heart
with ease using the power and quality of her songs and flowing guitar technique to convince.
|
|
Tonight Emma proves that she has grown in stature and turns more than a
few pleasantly surprised heads.
Delivering well constructed thought provoking songs, displaying a penchant
for abrupt endings that almost catch the adoring crowd unawares.
A semicircle of people move ever closer to the singer jostling for position
with photographers eagerly snapping away as Emma looks on undaunted; the true professional.
|
Roland Standaert who kindly let me use his photos for this piece explained how
he had first seen Emma busking on Penny Arcade three years ago.
It's strange because I too first heard her in that self same place.
I didn't know her name back then, just that she was a musician casting her
tunes out for an approving mind and a generous gesture.
Now she stands before an audience especially for her wishing every success and
congratulating her on the release of Oceans/Depart.
|
|
|
I wonder now to all those worldwide who would dearly love to witness this warm
candle lit corner, a haven sheltering lost souls.
Just as with that moment all those years ago that was never lost, I hope tonight's
memories last just as strongly.
|
|
As I gaze into waning candlelight Emma sings, Look no further than this.
She returns to an untainted, honest feel with a supportive message.
That message being; as long as we still have those who love and care for us
in these darker days, nothing else matters.
Honest sentiments sang with genuine passion: a platform for the juxtaposition
of sharper edged chords and the soaring echoic vocal power.
The timing is crucial with this style and she utilises chord breaks and vocal pauses to good effect.
Towards the end of the set, after one of the refrains in the random song clung to
the air, the pause was so enticing, as to bring forth an intensity not experienced
since SideWinder's acoustic outing in May.
|
The bursts of applause following each song had been steadily growing throughout
the night so much so that before her last number Emma's heartfelt words of
appreciation were almost drowned out by the enthusiastic crowd.
She is presented with a richly deserved bouquet.
Then a toast is drunk to her continuing success, a little overcome she
invites the audience to participate in the last song.
Emma somewhat ceremoniously takes of her heels and lays her guitar to rest, then
sings beautifully accapella style with the audience keeping the time with handclaps.
After the show Emma diligently spends the next half hour talking to fans and signing
copies of Oceans/Depart.
The five-track EP is on sale now for five pounds through InDreams Records and
all good record stores.

Album Reviews - Emma Rugg - Oceans / Depart EP By Steve Rudd
|
|
Since Hull singer-songwriter Emma released her fabulous debut album
Isolated Impression, her song writing style has changed somewhat,
with this five-track EP being the perfect showcase for two brand new
songs (in Oceans and Depart), along with appearances from her older
tunes When I Looked At You and Prelude To The End

Music Reviews - 6th June 05 - Brian McFadden at Hull City Hall By Matt Rudd
|
|
Brian Mcfadden is obviously very well known in the music world with his success
within the boy band Westlife.
But unfortunately for girls everywhere, Westlife split up.
However, this wasn't the end for Brian; he went on to become, well, a rock star.
And on June 6th he came to the Hull City Hall and I was there as Steve (my brother)
had won some tickets

On a weekend that saw John Hassal's new band Yeti headline at Silhouette, local promoter
Dean Shakespeare of U.T.I. but together an equally good mix of home grown and out of
town musical talent.
Saturday saw new local talent The Black Outs supporting Blue Sand and The Landaus.
Hogboy had to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances so the Landaus got
bumped up the billing.

Music Reviews - Friday 20th May - The Music with Youth Group at Asylum By Andy Dykes
|
|
It's hard to believe that Asylum at Hull University Union could be full of students,
all suited, booted and blind drunk celebrating at the end of year ball.
Now that the summer break has hit and the university is all but devoid of students,
it's great to see that there is still a huge crowd at the venue tonight to welcome The Music.

On Bank Holiday Monday Silhouette hosted a twelve-band extravaganza organized by James Applewhite
featuring one of the best local line-ups since some small scale gathering of Hulls finest in January.
There were also various festival stalls, with clothes and accessories from NSO and
politically motivated campaign stalls from the Green Party and the Legalize Cannabis Campaign.

Music Reviews - Pozition Night Club Rock Night - Wednesday 18th May 05 By Michelle Dee
|
|
After witnessing another fantastic performance by Ernest at the Adelphi last Wednesday I
decided to accept an invitation to the Pozition night club on George Street.
I paid the three pounds entry fee and received in return a little ticket informing
me that I was female; so far so good.
I walked into a large industrial style arena

Music Reviews - Saturday 28th May - The Rakes at Yo-Yo - Jumping For Victory By Andrew Coe 6 Page Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
|
|
NME favourites The Rakes came to Hull and conquered with their choppy,
wire-like guitar riffs and a front man who can't keep still.
If The Rakes frontman Alan Donohoe were still at school, he'd be
told off repeatedly for fidgeting in class. For the duration of the band's 12-song set
at Yo-Yo at The Welly, Hull on Saturday night

Music Reviews - Saturday 21st May 05 - Under The Influence Presents Mystery Jets at the New Adelphi By Emily

|
It is not very often you find a band that excites you, I mean really excites you.
Yet it seems that the Mystery Jets might just be the band for the job.
As painfully honest as it is the Hull scene has needed a kick up the ass for some time now.
While still maintaining the stunning talent on show in pubs and clubs all over the city,
a firm kick is needed to rid it of the Indie addiction and mullet pretension.

Music Reviews - Saturday 14th May 05 - Power Metal UK at Ringside - Pitiful Reign, Soulflame, Infobia, Humanity and Deliverance. By Michelle Dee
|
|
I shan't try and compare the acts that performed at the Power Metal UK night with any other well-known bands of similar genre. I have no desire to try and talk authoritatively on a school of music I haven't followed since the early days of Terrorvision and Silverchair.
However, Deliverance the headlining band, from Italy, have definite

Music Reviews - Saturday 1st May - Rock the Vote at The Adelphi By Lucy Kynman
|
|
Last night's amalgamation of Elobo and Funky for Rock the Vote, dedicated to raising funds
and showing the local area's support for the green party and candidate Martin Deane,
was a great success!
Green being the theme for the night, can I just say well done to Alice; when it comes to
creativity and a unique sense for interior design you never fail to hit the mark!
