He also has a number of songs about modern technology, he compares poetry to programming, there's an upbeat song called Hey hey 16K which is a look back to the days of Spectrum+ and those loading errors after waiting ages for Manic Miner to run. My favourite in this vein is one I found on the Shed Anthems CD in the multimedia section called Email. This recounts the feelings of longing for a reply to your email that you sent to a loved one. Crying over an empty Inbox then finding it still stuck in the Outbox.

I think anyone who has screamed blue murder at their P.C. screens will appreciate the sentiments within Email (Why is it blue murder? Red surely, would be a more murderous colour than blue...). With memorable lines like; you can't take your Tessa to the grave in the song Payday; and, he was run over by a milk-float - she went to live in Somerset, during Love story that never was it's no wonder that M.J. Hibbett has received critical acclaim. He's been played on Radio 1 and his 2003 release This is Not a Library was voted record of the year in Rolling Stone magazine. How this adulation sits with him I'm not sure; considering he is signed with the Artists Against Success label.

As he did when he played Adelphi with Jeffrey Lewis last year he finished his set with the audience participation piece by Jazzy Jeff. Yeah really, that one that goes, Boom Boom Shake the... you got it. He fits his quirky rap lines into the song perfectly telling us, M.J. Hibbett is who I am and I told my mother I'd never make a whack jam, priceless. I challenge anyone to not find something in his vast catalogue that doesn't make him or her smile, knowingly.

That's not to say the music is superfluous just undemanding. You listen to him sing/speak and marvel at his wordplay. Something about the way he keeps time, using disjointed couplets that nearly always rhyme. The way he drops that extra word in where you wouldn't expect. Imagery and themes that are immediately familiar like the one about going clubbing in the week called Clubbing in the Week. It's like drinking during the day, you know you shouldn't but you do, and then you suffer for it.
