Thursday 14th July - Jelly at The Welly By Michelle Dee inspired by Chris Morphine
contd.

Suzie states that Jelly is like a younger version of Friday nights at
Piper, but she assures me that she likes it. Young Emo punk, Nick Cobley of
Displacements fame had this to say - or rather yell, over the blast of funked up hip
hop and soul tunes in the Lounge - Woooah I really like it here, as did his companion Andy.
During the night I received many compliments on the Jelly night including
this one from the charming Charlotte Eva;
It's always a good night every Thursday, and it's really good.
Johnboy had this to say; long live Oasis and real rock n roll.
He was referring to the distinct absence of certain Indie chart breakers in
tonight's sweltering Ballroom crowd.
|
Talking of bands, many tonight said that they would like to see a live band introduced
to Jelly's platter.
I agree with this suggestion and it would give yet more club-goers the chance to
support the local scene.
Amongst the usual suspects of the Kaisers Chiefs, The Killers and Kasabian
were played by DJ Sam.V. We danced to the likes of Gorillaz, The Futureheads and
a new name to me The Arcade Fire.
|
|
|
When I asked some guy I chanced to meet at the bar, who he would pay the DJ to play at
this very moment he replied enigmatically, God loves money, but I would pay £10 to
hear Andy C. right now. I later discovered this was a well-known name in drum 'n' bass circles.
I suggest he nips back to DJ Defunct in the lounge, or if he has no luck there, to get his
chilled self to Shinobi to hear AOB, once a month at Welly
for the best in drum 'n' bass grooves.
At this juncture - somewhere between The Libertines and The Bravery - I should like to
mention the anonymous guy who picked up my notebook off the stage and simply wrote the
following on a full sheet, hmmm I love girls; very random, very spontaneous but pure quality.
|
Nearly everything tonight was positive. However, whilst in the ladies, I overheard
distressed calls coming from the cubicle next to me, from some troubled clubber who
couldn't get the cubicle door open from the inside.
Thankfully someone came to her aid by pushing the door from the outside.
I immediately looked to my own door to find it was missing a handle; it was only by a
stroke of luck I didn't find myself in the same worrying predicament.
This is something that needs to be addressed pronto, otherwise some poor girl is going
to end up trapped in there rather than lost in music.

|
Disco is so Retro, remarked photo genius Darren Rogers, live music fan and all round good guy.
Youthful Simon added, Great night, great people, cheap drinks ... he is, of course right,
Jelly is the best way to set the scene for a long weekend of partying.
As for the bar prices, draught pints at £2.00 and shots including mixers £1.50.
If only I had discovered that Newcastle Brown Ale - which incidentally is totally
okay for girls to drink - was the same price, instead of downing the equally priced
bottles of Becks, Carling and Budweiser.
|
I refer you now to the slightly wobbly Beadle who I met propping up the bar about
twenty minutes from the end of the night; Yeah, it's been all right tonight only because I
have been drinking the dirty whiskeys; everything's all good.
Nice and busy, must go and drink more whiskeys.

|
So as I twisted and turned to New Order's Blue Monday, probably the best twelve
inches of plastic a girl could own, The Smiths and The Buzzcocks, a strong sense of camaraderie grew.
It was as if we all shared something of the same strong identity, for that fleeting moment we were as one.
|
The euphoric crowd bathed in sweat, eerie lime-green light searched out half naked
lovers while Jelly shook and shimmered to a climax.
A night that comes highly recommended by all the sweet-indie-rock-disco jelly tots!

On Bank Holiday Monday Silhouette hosted a twelve-band extravaganza organized by James Applewhite

There were also various festival stalls, with clothes and accessories from NSO and
politically motivated campaign stalls from the Green Party and the Legalize Cannabis Campaign.

Music Reviews - Pozition Night Club Rock Night - Wednesday 18th May 05 By Michelle Dee
|
|
After witnessing another fantastic performance by Ernest at the Adelphi last Wednesday I
decided to accept an invitation to the Pozition night club on George Street.
I paid the three pounds entry fee and received in return a little ticket informing
me that I was female; so far so good.
I walked into a large industrial style arena

Music Reviews - Saturday 28th May - The Rakes at Yo-Yo - Jumping For Victory By Andrew Coe 6 Page Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
|
|
NME favourites The Rakes came to Hull and conquered with their choppy,
wire-like guitar riffs and a front man who can't keep still.
If The Rakes frontman Alan Donohoe were still at school, he'd be
told off repeatedly for fidgeting in class. For the duration of the band's 12-song set
at Yo-Yo at The Welly, Hull on Saturday night

Music Reviews - Saturday 21st May 05 - Under The Influence Presents Mystery Jets at the New Adelphi By Emily

It is not very often you find a band that excites you, I mean really excites you.
Yet it seems that the Mystery Jets might just be the band for the job.
As painfully honest as it is the Hull scene has needed a kick up the ass for some time now.
While still maintaining the stunning talent on show in pubs and clubs all over the city,
a firm kick is needed to rid it of the Indie addiction and mullet pretension.

Music Reviews - Saturday 14th May 05 - Power Metal UK at Ringside - Pitiful Reign, Soulflame, Infobia, Humanity and Deliverance. By Michelle Dee
|
|
I shan't try and compare the acts that performed at the Power Metal UK night with any other well-known bands of similar genre. I have no desire to try and talk authoritatively on a school of music I haven't followed since the early days of Terrorvision and Silverchair.
However, Deliverance the headlining band, from Italy, have definite

Music Reviews - Saturday 1st May - Rock the Vote at The Adelphi By Lucy Kynman
|
|
Last night's amalgamation of Elobo and Funky for Rock the Vote, dedicated to raising funds
and showing the local area's support for the green party and candidate Martin Deane,
was a great success!
Green being the theme for the night, can I just say well done to Alice; when it comes to
creativity and a unique sense for interior design you never fail to hit the mark!

Music Reviews - Saturday 23rd April - Hard-Fi, Boy Kill Boy and Turismo at Sweet n Sour, Silhouette Club By Dick Spring
with a terrfic 9 page Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
|
|
On arrival at the front of the club I find a queue waiting to get in, so this must be some
measure of the demand for this show tonight (oh, the power of hype) though a top ten
single can't have helped the headline band's cause at all!
It was indeed packed out, it took me twenty minutes to get a drink, which is something
that needs to be addressed by

Music Reviews - Thursday 21st April - Ernest, Rumpus, Scaramanga Six and Fonda 500 at the Adelphi Happy as a Sandman By Michelle Dee
|
|
What a fantastic night.
No really, if you weren't there then you missed out on seeing some of the finest
bands the other side of sanity.
The monthly local music magazine, oft slated in its own backyard landed a
winning formula tonight.
Ernest, who everyone should experience, continue to be spine
tingling and achingly beautiful.
Last night they grabbed
