You know it's been a good night when your face hurts from smiling and ears are ringing from the evening's entertainment. The performance given last night from all three bands made the evening highly entertaining. It was also the first time that I had managed to make it back to The Ringside in five months.

My initial response was that the club was still exactly the same; a Blackpool Cabaret bar or a collection of various suites and lounges from the hilarious Peter Kay's Phoenix Nights. But quicker than you can say light entertainment, bingo and indeed comperes, the room is overrun by Hull's next generation of punks, when taking all this in I got a warm feeling of recognition.

This was fantastic! This was me and my friends only three years ago, watching bands, supporting local music and getting the buzz from your peers. However it must be brought to light that punks and music lovers from all generations had made the effort to come and support the local talent. The evening had a whiff of fun about it and at various intervals throughout the night the whiff became a stench.

First up on the evenings bill came a shy and perhaps slightly nervous, When Water Comes. The body language these five teens were giving was definitely uncomfortable but as soon as they cranked up the amps and let their own personal hell break loose, they knew they were home.

Considering they haven't practiced since before the yuletide festivities, When Water Comes performance proved they have a lot of potential to make a name for themselves locally and perhaps eventually nationally. A tight and confident performance was supported by frantic movement from vocalist and band alike. The five piece ripped through their own emotive blend of Glassjaw and AFI sounding punk rock, leaving myself and others wanting more.

No bullshit, no egos When Water Comes are just a great band that enjoy playing music that means something to themselves and others who are listening. Stand out tracks from the set included Broken Bones and Shatter, Way about you, and Fallen Hero. If you like dark punk then try your best to catch When Water Comes.

The atmosphere now was enthusiastic for more. We wanted more punk rock and we wanted to enjoy the evening. However Jonny Panic didn't give us the former. When this quartet from the south stepped up to the microphone I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. A bunch of twenty something's wearing the most stereotypical punk clothing; from the safety pin to the bondage pants and doing the stereotypical bounce and shake Jonny Panic didn't cut it for me personally, a bit of substance usually comes with style (or we hope it does).

But the sheer pretentious vibe Jonny Panic gave off was so cringe worthy it was hilarious! What made it even more entertaining was see the Hull crowd being able to sniff a pile of turd a mile off; in fact I became quite enthralled by the various hand gestures that flew towards the stage. The band were entertaining in the respect that they looked like a punk parody but the sad thing is they are deadly serious and deadly awful.

If you like your punk choreographed and full of lyrics like The music pumpin' through my veins, then you will adore Jonny Panic. Again, if you like to watch Celebrity Big Brother and love to see people embarrass themselves in front of people like myself then you too will love Jonny Panic.

Finally and thankfully American based The Reputations come and save us from the terror we had been held witness to. Apparently, the current line up is home to a former Screeching Weasel member, however the sound The Reputations sport has the elements of Tilt, No Use For a Name and perhaps a weakened Tsunami Bomb rather than a traditional punk rock band.

The female vocalist constantly wants to remind this modest audience that she is a female singing in a rock band, however this isn't annoying and becomes an intimate joke between band and audience. The Reputations are basically a brilliant band and can play their own style of music which an audience can appreciate, not concerned with speed and aggression they manage to play with harmonies and bar chords to come up with some truly feel good moments. If you get chance to catch The Reputations again whilst on tour do so.

A great night again by The Ringside: two really great passionate bands and something that made me panic.
