Music Live Band Nightclubs Reviews
Kill Surf City

So what is it that has got everyone so hot under the collar, what has this band got that the others don't. First thing that springs to mind is a feminine touch in the form of Katie and Rachael on drums and bass.

Not a standard bass either no, modest in size , shapely, stylish with sonorous notes played at a high angle in a focussed unfussy way. The drums are for the most; sound minimalist some time offbeat at all times atmospheric. They seem to fall in and out of the songs with ease never dominating but neither are they too shy to be heard.
Front man Dave plays the quintessential English gent to a tee. His dress-sense and mannerisms are indicative of the scholarly Oxbridge set.

If he ever rides a bicycle he is sure to have bike clips. I get the feeling that an overall look is paramount rather than the individual parts.

Studying him closer I kept getting an inkling of something that I just couldn't put my finger on. Then when I discovered his origins were in South Africa, I had it. His Englishness was more colonial than mainland Britain.
Dave has ... for the love of god I'm a poet with a license for artistic flair, you just can't be a Dave... a vintage look but not just any vintage look this seems to be an extension of his persona. On stage he sings with confidence and a sense of purpose; meaningful and at times menacing. He clearly loves the limelight fronting a band with self styled élan.

His movements on stage are like that of a doll with barely minutes to spare before having to fall silent and still. Eyes a glow, body leant at a rakish angle, a jaunty step with a theatrical twist. The doll analogy works well, for when he is off stage he takes up the mantle of quiet and reflective, not one for sudden outbursts or extremes of behaviour. Rest assured on stage he is a totally different proposition.
Last week the band played their first live session on BBC Raw Talent judging by the flood of responses they got the band once again did the name Kill Surf City no end of good. What lies ahead for possibly the most innovative band to come out of Hull since Fonda.

Well just that I should think, a series of out of Hull gigs, touring the North Easts' towns and cities. Then a few more of those prestigious support slots wouldn't go amiss. I'd love to see them support a band like ILIKETRAINS or the breakthrough group from Stoke Alfa 9 then by the latter end of summer they could fare well at Yo-Yo. They'll need some more songs along the way and to find a producer with a sense of dramatic style to harness the best from the wildly exciting sound of Kill Surf City.

Music Reviews - Saturday 21st May 05 - Under The Influence Presents Mystery Jets at the New Adelphi By Emily Photo Gallery By Michelle Dee
It is not very often you find a band that excites you, I mean really excites you. Yet it seems that the Mystery Jets might just be the band for the job. As painfully honest as it is the Hull scene has needed a kick up the ass for some time now. While still maintaining the stunning talent on show in pubs and clubs all over the city, a firm kick is needed to rid it of the Indie addiction and mullet pretension. Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 14th May 05 - Power Metal UK at Ringside - Pitiful Reign, Soulflame, Infobia, Humanity and Deliverance. By Michelle Dee
I shan't try and compare the acts that performed at the Power Metal UK night with any other well-known bands of similar genre. I have no desire to try and talk authoritatively on a school of music I haven't followed since the early days of Terrorvision and Silverchair. However, Deliverance the headlining band, from Italy, have definite Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 1st May - Rock the Vote at The Adelphi By Lucy Kynman
Last night's amalgamation of Elobo and Funky for Rock the Vote, dedicated to raising funds and showing the local area's support for the green party and candidate Martin Deane, was a great success! Green being the theme for the night, can I just say well done to Alice; when it comes to creativity and a unique sense for interior design you never fail to hit the mark! Read more...

Music Reviews - Saturday 23rd April - Hard-Fi, Boy Kill Boy and Turismo at Sweet n Sour, Silhouette Club By Dick Spring with a terrfic 9 page Photo Gallery By Darren Rogers
On arrival at the front of the club I find a queue waiting to get in, so this must be some measure of the demand for this show tonight (oh, the power of hype) though a top ten single can't have helped the headline band's cause at all! It was indeed packed out, it took me twenty minutes to get a drink, which is something that needs to be addressed by Read more...

This is the first article I've ever written for thisisUll.com. Even though I've logged on regularly for the past year or so, and I follow the local music scene avidly, I've never been moved to put pen to paper. Until now. About six months ago, I wandered down to The Sesh Read more...
