David Wrench - The Atomic World of Tomorrow By Steve Rudd

This ten-song-strong masterpiece of an LP is in a league of its own, as this David Wrench character proves to be something of an Alt-Pop-loving genius in his own right. Boldly opening with World War 4, this upbeat tune is literally out of this world and heaving with the chorus-based pop elements of Erasure and Duran Duran in their musical prime. It's quirky, it's tongue-in-cheek, and it's surely like very little you've ever heard before.

The synth-heavy Arctic Fox, likewise, is a cut above that shimmers with a meticulously appealing pop sheen, while the poetry-parading vocals might remind of Morrissey's singing style. Lonely Winter In A Seaside Town (which, coincidentally, is the type of song title that Morrissey is prone to conjure) pits an awesome melody against melancholic lyrics.

Similarly, The World Will Turn as The World Will Burn might sound to be foretelling imminent apocalypse, but on hearing the sheer exuberance of this song - that really does snap, crackle and pop - a widespread, face-consuming grin will be nigh impossible to suppress. Indeed, David Wrench's music somehow can't fail to make you happy, given the wicked beats and proud Electro-Pop style of the songs. If this is how The Atomic World of Tomorrow sounds, then so be it. In fact, bring it on... 8/10
