Razorlight - Somewhere Else (Vertigo) By Steve Rudd

Face it - Razorlight front man Johnny Borrell is a total star in his own right, even without the other three lads that make up this tantalisingly talented band... especially when he's armed and potentially infamous with his trusted acoustic guitar. Still, the full band sound is hard to beat, and this tune in Somewhere Else is perhaps the quartet's most accomplished tune yet, serving as a precursor to their eagerly awaited follow-up album to their Up All Night LP that stormed the charts on release, and that has now sold in excess of half a million copies!

This tune marauds forth with a crisp and vibrant acoustic guitar-rooted chord progression that sets up Johnny's healthily husky vocals just perfectly, with fellow band members Bjorn Agren (is that his real name, or is he just a huge Abba fan?!), Carl Dalemo and Andy Burrows making a magical racket right there behind. Somewhere Else is an expertly structured masterpiece: an immensely catchy dose of classic indie-pop-rock music that is timeless in essence. No wonder then that these boys won the Best New Band award at 2004's Q awards, because there are few bands better than Razorlight right now. So much so that their March 2005 tour of the UK sold out - with not a dry eye left in the house. 8/10 www.razorlight.co.uk
