Paparazzi Whore - I'd Rather Be Infamous Than Famous (DV8 Productions) Reviewed By Steve Rudd

There aren't many bands around that allow their sound to be dominated by a bass-driven whirlwind of noise. Paparazzi Whore are something of a unique band, in that there is no lead guitar melody in the mix, but just bass guitar and rhythm guitar... both played by Chris Oaten, who is one of the four talented band members. Fronted by the feisty Micci Oaten (who also plays keyboards), these whores here present eleven stunning tunes, all of which are fit to bursting with an incredibly vibrant Pop sensibility that knocks even Brand Violet's catchy commercial appeal for six.

I Don't Think So is the album's opening anthem, and the very first line that Micci coincidentally sings is Where's your sense of humour? The music, appropriately, is fast, fun and fittingly refreshing, as fuzzy Glam-Punk-Pop vibes proceed to envelope I'll Be Your Boyfriend.

Paparazzi Whore already has a legion of loyal fans in high places, with Steve Lamacq and XFM's Claire Sturgess regularly playing their tunes on their respective radio shows. They have also featured on the BBC radio show Raw Talent, which attracted even more fans to their music. Once you've heard their music, resistance seems futile, especially given the gobsmacking intensity of their bass-driven sound.

The sheer cool of tunes such as Automatic Anarchist, the grungy swagger and dark menace of Beneath Your Skin (during which Micci sings What the hell will you gain when you push it in your vein?, as though serious drug issues are being addressed) and the most excellent album-closing Armchair Adventure are further reasons for this band being heard.
