Athlete - Twenty Four Hours (Parlophone) Reviewed By Steve Rudd

Ever since these four guys released their Vehicles And Animals album, they've been an exciting band to watch, but since the release of their more recent Tourist long-player, this quartet has rightfully became very well known indeed. This stunning single release follows on from their hugely popular Wires and Half Light singles, with this mid-paced anthem in Twenty Four Hours being a touching gem, as subtle piano tinklings and a delicate string arrangement stir emotions.

Athlete's trademark strain of melancholy dominates the song (Faster than the speed of light, I'm holding on - I'm holding tight), along - in this instance - with a similar type of serious foreboding that accompanies David Bowie's dark Five Years. Athlete's songs might not be quite as anthemic as Coldplay's material, but Athlete certainly have the ability to produce truly beautiful melodies and disarmingly breathtaking arrangements to ensure that their work is genuinely unforgettable.

Fittingly, the band is fresh from their biggest UK tour to date (that saw them play their hearts out through October and November), and the Tourist album has now sold in excess of 500,000 copies. If all that wasn't enough, they've also spent time on tour with U2 and revelled in the excitement of having performed at Glastonbury and V2005, amongst other festivals. Also included on this CD single release is the LP version of the song (which is near-identical to the radio edit), along with an instrumental version of the tune, which further proves just how moving their music can be...
