No, they all have very short haircuts and are wearing fairly non-descript t-shirts and jeans.
The band delivers a great stock in trade of ska and reggae influenced songs.
Matt McManamon lead-singer delights the crowd by, more than once, playing his
guitar held aloft, with the neck pointing to the ceiling.
Bass player Charlie Turner has some fancy footwork and an equal penchant for guitar thrusts.
|
|
|
Halfway through the set Ben Gordon on lead-guitar swaps his instrument and plays
keyboards and the feeling changes dramatically; the much-used phrase comes to
mind that is, crossover sound.
When Ben then beats out a stomping rhythm, on a set of hand drums, for what seems
like an age there is no doubt in my mind, this is almost certainly Indy/Ska/Reggae/Dance music.
Genre destroying it's probably a good thing, might get everyone singing from the same lyric sheet.
The crowd react to the faster tempos and heightened atmosphere and begin to let go.
|
|
With the hundred and fifty strong audience applauding with gusto and cheering
wildly the band play their trump card; the song Riot On The Radio is so catchy
it's stuck in your head after just one listen.
Having heard it and danced to it more than half a dozen times at local indie club
nights, seeing it played live a few feet away was an awesome experience.
At the time of going to press the band were due to do a live set on Viking FM on the 26th June.
|
|
|
Maybe the cross-genre sound will make The Dead 60s appeal to more of the populous,
whatever, if their latest single Loaded Gun proves half as popular as Riot then we could
have, in our midst, new contenders to the new wave crown.
And credit where credit's due, the band even came back and did an encore.
As the siren once again wailed around the ballroom, marking The Dead 60s departure,
a sea of sweaty but thoroughly exhilarated live music fans were left wondering
whether they had just witnessed the future stars of the British scene.
|
Incidentally, the lead-singer from The Kooks stated that tonight's gig was the
best he'd seen the headliners the whole tour; he should know seeing as they have
gigged side by side for the past ten days.
A big cheer to all the bands both local and further a field for making this
weekend one to remember and to U.T.I., Adelphi and the Welly for making it all run smoothly.
When's the next one Dean?

For two Tuesdays in a row now The Sesh has proved to be the venue of choice.
Last week it was almost impossible to move, due to all the people that turned out to show
their support for the tsunami benefit gig.
This Tuesday the whole place is again full, it may not be as

A Turismo acoustic session, a new member of The Bonnitts, The Johnsons making their live debut, all at

Music Reviews - 10,000 Things at Jaz Bar - 26th October 04 By Caroline Murphy
|

So what do the music magazines know about the sensitive side of a group of sexed up 20-some-Things!
Their stage show gives anything but that impression, but close-up and personal in the smaller
venues of Hull Jaz Bar and Shrewsbury Buttermarket, I can tell a different story.

Once again tonight, Princes Ave's Linnet and Lark plays host to a evening of live bands.
With a stage littered with instruments and a bar crowded with rock n roll types, it looks
suitably like the home of what is fast becoming one of the most widely respected and
indeed played evenings in Hull.
Tonight's headliners

Music Reviews - Blind Frog Ernie, Blue Sand the Applewhites and Displacements at Piper November23rd By Michelle Dee Photos by Darren Rogers

The Piper club on Newland Avenue has, according to many people, always had something of a volatile reputation.
On more than one occasion I have heard reports from people that you always get fights and
fracas at the venue.
Indeed the last time I went to the Piper there was a very
