Music Live Band Nightclubs Reviews
18th/19th June 05 - Under The Influence Big Weekender at Adelphi and Welly (3/4)
By Michelle Dee
(1/4), (2/4), (3/4), (4/4).

He then proceeds to carry me in fireman's lift fashion across the dance floor where I am deposited unceremoniously by the stage. I have grown accustomed to the antics on and off stage that occur during Park and Ride gigs, but as for what happened during Butt Banger... well, it was down right filthy but loads of fun.
Jonathon has a new toy that has strange electronic sounds on it and a drum machine that may suggest added dimensions to their overall sound. Yet again another quality gig from Park and Ride; the band brave enough to plough their own furrow.

Next were the first of the visiting bands. The Kooks from Brighton had been due to play at the Adelphi a while ago but had to cancel due to illness. This time they arrived in our fair city on Saturday night hoping to sample a slice of our club scene.
Shame on you Hull, they were made to feel unwelcome and the oppressive atmosphere was not to their liking, instead they beat the retreat back to the safety of their hotel. Should have beaten them with your swords boys.

Tonight they seemed to have some fans in the audience and I hope they felt a little more appreciated. The Kooks played a measured set, nothing too heavy, no screechy vocals just listenable songs with good rhythms and tidy instrumentation. They had a ska almost Police vibe about them very English albeit W. Indies. Now and again the guitars went off on a soft rock hook rather than the standard Indie sound; it made for good variation and showed of digital dexterity.
I found myself being strangely drawn to their drummer: a bear-like, happy sort, with large arms and a good line in dominant drumbeats.

Once again the crowd stayed too far back so as to make it difficult for lead-singer Luke Pritchard to really bond with them. As for the rest of the rest of the band they could clearly play but I didn't feel the connection between them.
They were like small fruit trees, individually good, but not good enough yet to make up an orchard. This kind of cohesion will most likely show itself the longer they play together as a band. I was dancing to the unfamiliar tunes by the end of their set so definitely worth another few listens and a return visit.

The Dead 60s seemed to take an age to get set up, but once the sirens started heralding their imminent arrival on to the Welly stage the crowd surged forward as one. The first thing you notice about this Liverpool band is the fact they look nothing like the current hoard of groups sporting the scruffy barnets.

Its rock-a-rama at Asylum: tonight. Three bands, one bill, all about the rock. First up, Disarm:. Their cover of New Order's Blue Monday is superb, harking back to Marilyn Manson and Dope's covers of new romantic greats. Disarm:'s own material is intricate Read more...

Music Reviews - Monday 28th February - Black Orchid, Diverse Unit, Second To Last, The Regicides at the Ringside
By Harry Slater
It's cold tonight, not as cold as it was this morning, but cold enough to complain about. The garish decoration of The Ringside makes a welcome change from the browns and greys of a city thawing out. The outside door, as per usual, scares the crap out of me as it slams shut Read more...
